By Stephen Rex Brown and Graham Rayman, New York Daily News – “The NYPD is investigating its first Palestinian Muslim captain for cheating on his promotions exam, The Daily News has learned.

Capt. Ahmad Othman, who works in Brooklyn’s 73rd Precinct, has been placed on desk duty while the investigation continues.

Othman’s not alone — sources said other captains are under scrutiny as well. The NYPD is already investigating the results of the 2015 lieutenant’s test.

Othman, 36, was one of 14 captains promoted on June 26, 2015, in a ceremony at police headquarters.

One of his fellow promotees that day was Scott Forster, the captain now infamous for failing to show at the hospital where two shot and wounded officers were taken on Feb. 20.

Othman has enjoyed a relatively fast rise in the NYPD, having joined the department in 2005, working out of the 120th Precinct in Staten Island.

When he was promoted a decade later, the NYPD’s Muslim Officers Society tweeted, ‘Congratulations to Ahmad Othman on his promotion to Captain and being the first Palestinian Muslim Captain in NYPD.’

The Daily News reported Thursday that nine sergeants are suing the city alleging the results of the 2015 lieutenant’s test were tainted by cheating.

The lawsuit alleges that cops missed the initial test date on purpose to take a makeup test the following week in order to get the answers. The passage rate in the makeup test was far higher than on the initial test date.

Othman, who took the test a day late, is suspected of something similar.” Read more.

Associated Press – “The Islamic State group has trained at least 400 fighters to target Europe in deadly waves of attacks, deploying interlocking terror cells like the ones that struck Brussels and Paris with orders to choose the time, place and method for maximum carnage, officials have told The Associated Press.

The network of agile and semiautonomous cells shows the reach of the extremist group in Europe even as it loses ground in Syria and Iraq. The officials, including European and Iraqi intelligence officials and a French lawmaker who follows the jihadi networks, described camps in Syria, Iraq and possibly the former Soviet bloc where attackers are trained to attack the West. Before being killed in a police raid, the ringleader of the Nov. 13 Paris attacks claimed he had entered Europe in a multinational group of 90 fighters, who scattered ‘more or less everywhere.’

But the biggest break yet in the Paris attacks investigation — the arrest on Friday of fugitive Salah Abdeslam— did not thwart the multipronged attack just four days later on the Belgian capital’s airport and metro that left 31 people dead and an estimated 270 wounded. Three suicide bombers also died.

Just as in Paris, Belgian authorities were searching for at least one fugitive in Tuesday’s attacks — this time for a man wearing a white jacket who was seen on airport security footage with the two suicide attackers. The fear is that the man, whose identity Belgian officials say is not known, will find Abdeslam’s path instructive.

After fleeing Paris immediately after the November attacks, Abdeslam forged a new network back in his childhood neighborhood of Molenbeek, long known as a haven for jihadis, and renewed plotting, according to Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders.

‘Not only did he drop out of sight, but he did so to organize another attack, with accomplices everywhere. With suicide belts. Two attacks organized just like in Paris. And his arrest, since they knew he was going to talk, it was a response: ‘So what if he was arrested? We’ll show you that it doesn’t change a thing,” said French Senator Nathalie Goulet, co-head of a commission tracking jihadi networks.

The South Asian country has seen a surge in Islamist violence in which liberal activists, members of minority Muslim sects and other religious groups have been targeted.

The U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group said Daesh claimed responsibility for killing Hussein Ali Sarkar in Kurigram, north of Dhaka.

ISIS celebrates Brussels massacre by handing out candy to children

IndiaToday – “After claiming the responsibility of the attacks in Brussels that killed more than 30 people, ISIS has threatened to bring ‘dark days’ in the countries trying to bring down the militant organisation.

In a statement ISIS said a ‘secret cell of soldiers’ had launched the attack. The statement was published in Arabic and French, and an English translation was provided by the SITE Intelligence Group.

‘We vow to bring dark days to the crusader nations that have allied themselves against the Islamic State, in response to their aggression against our state,’ the statement read.

The terrorist organisation said, ‘what awaits you will be even harsher, even more bitter, by the permission of Allah’. It also released photos showing the fighters in Syria giving candies to children to celebrate the Brussels attacks, reports The Independent.

Extremists are carrying out mock beheadings and taught how to slit the throat of a bound captive, according to prison sources.

The shocking revelations claim that would-be terrorists are being given lessons in how to carry out mass killings during supposed ‘evening classes’ – the Daily Star Sunday has reported.

Held in cells – fanatics inside category A prisons such as Belmarsh, Whitemoor and Long Lartin – are using diagrams and models to teach jihadi recruits how to construct a booby trap, make the poison Ricin and create explosives from just garden fertiliser.

The government believes around 1,000 prisoners are at risk of being radicalised.

English jails currently hold 131 Islamist inmates convicted of terrorist offences.

One senior prison source said: ‘We have caught terrorist prisoners showing other inmates how to carry out an execution. When we ask what they are doing, the inmates claim they are messing around – but it’s clear that they are involved in something far more sinister.

FoxNews – “As many as 31 people were killed and more than 180 injured as coordinated terrorist bombings rocked the Brussels airport and subway system during rush hour Tuesday morning in the Belgian capital.

Two bombings at Zaventem Airport, where 11 people were reportedly killed, and another at the metro station in the Maelbeek section near the European Union headquarters, where the mayor’s office said 20 were killed, were almost immediately confirmed as terrorism. The attack at the airport was reportedly accompanied by shouts in Arabic and gunfire, and an unexploded suicide belt was reportedly found in the aftermath.

‘What we feared has happened, we were hit by blind attacks,’ said Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel.

‘We are at war,’ French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Tuesday. ‘We have been subjected for the last few months in Europe to acts of war.’

The attacks, which Belgian authorities said were suicide bombings, came four days after the main suspect in the November Paris attacks was arrested in Brussels, and even as Brussels was braced for new attacks.

By Traci Watson, USA Today – “An emerald-green comet will brush the Earth Monday, followed one day later by a kissing cousin that will swerve closer to the planet than any other comet in nearly 250 years.

The first and bigger of the two comets will be visible Monday to the naked eye in the southern hemisphere, as long as city lights are far away. Stargazers in the United States will probably need only binoculars to see the bigger comet in late March. Scientists, however, are bringing out the big guns. The Hubble Space Telescope, the powerful ground-based Gemini telescopes and others will be trained on the celestial visitors, which will provide an extraordinary close-up of objects usually glimpsed only at a distance.

‘This is one for the record books,’ says Michael Kelley of the University of Maryland, who’s never heard of two comets approaching close to Earth a day apart. ‘It’s a fantastic opportunity for professionals to learn more about comets, and if you have a chance to try to find them … it’s a fantastic chance to see part of history as it happens.’

The first member of the pair, known as comet 252P/LINEAR, is a bright green color from the carbon gas it’s puffing out, says the University of Maryland’s Matthew Knight. 252P will slide past Earth at a distance of roughly 3 million miles. That’s well beyond the moon but near enough to put 252P in the top 10 of closest-approaching comets.

252P wasn’t expected to get terribly bright, but it has been ‘surpassing all expectations,’ says amateur comet-hunter Michael Mattiazzo of Australia. It may even be visible to the unaided eye in southern hemisphere suburbs where light pollution is low.

Astronomers discovered the trailing member of the pair, P/2016 BA14, a few months ago. It was shrugged off as yet another asteroid, or space rock. Then astronomers peering through a telescope saw it had a tail – and was therefore a comet. By Robert Spencer, Jihad Watch – “French authorities, like authorities all over the West, were sure that Islam was a Religion of Peace, and so there would be absolutely no problem with Muslims in the police force and the military, and only greasy Islamophobes thought otherwise. Now they are, sacre bleu, dealing with jihadis and Islamic supremacists among the police and military. Who could possibly have foreseen such an improbability?

According to a confidential memo, dated January 2015, from the anti-terrorist unit of the French interior ministry, France is already host to 8,250 radical Islamists (a 50% increase in one year).

Some of these Islamists have gone to Syria to join the Islamic State (IS); others have infiltrated all levels of society, starting with the police and the armed forces.

A leaked confidential memo from the Department of Public Security, published by Le Parisien, details 17 cases of police officers radicalized between 2012 and 2015. Particularly noted were the police officers who listen to and broadcast Muslim chants while on patrol.

Some of these police officers have openly refused to protect synagogues or to observe a minute of silence to commemorate the deaths of victims of terrorist attacks.

In addition, the police were alerted to a policewoman who incited terrorism on Facebook, and called her police uniform a “filthy rag of the Republic” while wiping her hands on it. In January 2015, immediately after the attacks on Charlie Hebdo and the Hypercacher kosher supermarket in Vincennes, which had left 17 people dead, she wrote on her Facebook page: “Masked attack led by Zionist cowards… They need to be killed.”

That police officers are armed and have access to police databases only intensifies anxiety.

Although police headquarters in Paris claims that these cases are rare, they have decided to review on a weekly basis any behavior that oversteps the principle of separation of church and state, such as that of Muslim officers who appear to be leaning toward radicalization. Patrice Latron, who manages the office of the Paris police prefect, told Le Parisien that these phenomena are “very marginal.”

The police are not the only ones who are anxious; the French military is concerned as well. There are no statistics for the number of Muslim soldiers in the French armed forces, but it is commonly thought that there are many, and that they are vulnerable to Islamist influences, given that France in engaged militarily in Africa, against Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and against the Islamic State in the Middle East. Since theCharlie Hebdo attack in January 2015, however, France’s largest military operation has been on national soil: 10,000 armed soldiers are now deployed in France to protect synagogues, Jewish schools, train and subway stations, and also some mosques — to show Muslims that the French Republic does not see them as enemies. Their mission is no longer to be simply a complementary force but, as Le Figaro explained, to “deploy, on a permanent basis, interior military operations.”

As early as 2013, during the fifth national security parliamentary conference, Colonel Pascal Rolez, adjunct to the assistant director of the counter-intervention unit of the Defense Security Protection Department (DPSD), declared, “We are witnessing an increase in radicalization among the French military, notably since the Merah affair.” Recall that Mohammed Merah, a young French Muslim, murdered three French soldiers in Toulouse and Montauban, as well as murdering four French Jews at a school in Toulouse.

By Adam Miller, Global News – “The 27-year-old man accused of stabbing two soldiers at a Canadian Forces recruitment centre previously worked at Toronto’s largest airport and had access to restricted areas.

Ayanle Hassan Ali worked for a third party employer at Toronto Pearson International Airport from December 2008 to March 2009 and possessed a Restricted Area Identification Card, according to the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.

‘[Ali] is not an employee of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority nor does he currently work at Toronto Pearson,’ a spokeswoman for the organization told Global News.

‘We join all Canadians in wishing the injured soldiers a speedy recovery, and in saluting the brave personnel who intervened to defuse the attack.’

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said Ali walked into the office located in a federal government building in north Toronto around 3 p.m. Monday and slashed a male soldier behind the counter in the arm with a ‘large knife,’ then tried and failed to stab a female soldier before being subdued by Forces members, one of whom was injured in the process.

Both soldiers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Saunders told reporters Tuesday the accused said at the scene ‘Allah told me to do this. Allah told me to come here and kill people.’

Police said they believe Ali acted alone in the stabbing but added investigators are looking into any possible connections with terror groups.” Read more.

What About Knife-O-Phobia? – “[Toronto Police Chief Mark] Saunders said: ‘I want to be very, very careful, when it comes to the national security piece, that we don’t go through that Islamophobia nonsense.’ Excuse me, but the police chief is worried about ‘Islamophobia’? How about ‘knife-o-phobia’? From what we know of this incident, conveyed by the police chief, a man allegedly walked into a military recruitment centre in Toronto, went on a stabbing spree against uniformed personnel, invoking the name of Allah. Don’t Islamist suicide bombers often invoke the name of Allah when they blow themselves up? This comes a year-and-a-half after two members of our armed forces were gunned down and run over in separate, fatal attacks by radicalized Muslims. It comes just months after Daesh, the Islamic State, carried out a deadly massacre of civilians in Paris. And yet Toronto’s police chief is lecturing people about Islamophobia?” Read more.
