Welch, USA Today – “Authorities identified three suspects in a deadly shooting attack on a satirical newspaper that killed 12 people Wednesday as thousands jammed a public square for an evening vigil honoring victims of France’s deadliest terror attack in a half century.

Two of those killed were police officers, one of them shot dead on a sidewalk outside the newspaper. Eight journalists were among the victims.

The suspects are two brothers — Said, 34, and Cherif Kouachi, 32, both French nationals — and Hamyd Mourad, 18, whose nationality wasn’t known, a Paris police official told the Associated Press. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

The youngest suspect surrendered at a police station in Charleville-Mezieres, a small town in France’s eastern Champagne region, Paris prosecutor’s spokeswoman Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre said. French police early Thursday released photos of the brothers they were seeking, saying they should be considered armed and dangerous.

French news media reported late Wednesday that a major police operation was taking place around an apartment building in Reims, about 90 miles northeast of Paris.

The brothers were born in Paris of Algerian descent. Cherif was sentenced to three years in prison on terrorism charges in May 2008. Both brothers returned from Syria this summer.

At least 15,000 gathered at the Place de la République for a vigil after the three gunmen, wearing hoods and armed with Kalashnikov automatic rifles, stormed the offices of Charlie Hebdo, shouting Islamic phrases and killing 12 people. The publication is a satirical newspaper that has caricatured the prophet Mohammed…

President Francois Hollande called the attack a terrorist act ‘of exceptional barbarism,’ and said other attacks have been thwarted in France in recent weeks. Fears have been running high in France and elsewhere in Europe that jihadis returning from conflicts in Syria and Iraq will stage attacks at home.

Cherif Kouachi was well known to French law enforcement. At 26, he was sentenced to three years in prison with 18 months suspended for criminal association with a terrorist enterprise for his conviction in 2008 as part of a group of seven men.

Prosecutors said the group recruited French Muslims to fight for al-Qaeda in Iraq. The group, known as the 19th Arrondissement Network for the working class Paris district where it was based, allegedly recruited young men, arranged for weapons training and helped them travel though Syria to Iraq. Police arrested Kouachi in January 2005, days before he allegedly planned to travel to Syria.” Read more.

‘Screaming phrases from the Koran, Moroccan devastates a church in Trentino,’ Secolo d’Italia (translated), January 2, 2015:

Mumbling phrases of the Koran in Arabic, a Moroccan threw to the ground and severely damaged five statues of artistic value and other furniture and religious objects in a church in Trentino. The devastation took place Thursday afternoon in the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cles (Trento); the perpetrator was a 67-year-old Moroccan who was arrested by the police. The alarm was raised by a woman who saw the man mumbling phrases in Arabic and entering and leaving the church, where the Mass had been celebrated and at the time of his action was empty. The Moroccan acted in a few minutes, using an iron rod and throwing to the ground the statue of the Madonna and Child, the Immaculate, those of Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Sorrows and the statue of St. Joseph with the Child. On these statues he was relentless, using six solid silver candlesticks dating back to 1700. The candelabra had the papal bull of protection for those stolen or sold. The vandal has also targeted the marble altar and the baptistery, which shattered, two altars and a large painting of the Assumption. All damaged items are cataloged at the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage of the Autonomous Province of Trento.

Blocked by the police, the man was arrested on charges of aggravated damage. He will be tried in the Court of Trento. The Moroccan is a longtime resident in Trentino, and since last summer has lived in Cles. According to the police, his actions are connected to mental problems, and not to religious fanaticism. The man has for several months shown signs of anxiety, and already last month disturbed a religious function in the same parish church of Cles.

“Something of this kind we would have never imagined, the church devastated by a character who everyone thought dangerous and who is not new to attacks against our religion,” said a shocked witness at the site grandecocomero.com. The man in question had already stopped a religious function in November. “He had entered with a stick and started yelling verses of the Koran,” recounted a lady….

Channel 4 News (Nigeria) – “A new assault on the town of Baga, in the north of the country, may have left 2,000 people dead, according to official Musa Alhaji Bukar, speaking to the BBC.

Militants were reported to have attacked and burned down the entire town yesterday, after having overpowered government troops on a base on Saturday.

A district head speaking to Reuters put the death toll at more than 100, with witnesses saying dozens may have been killed when insurgents began to shoot indiscriminately and burning buildings on Tuesday and Wednesday in attacks on the civilian population.

Amhed Khalifa, a senator for Borno state where Baga is situated, told NBC News that -10-to-20- other communities in the country’s northeast had been razed over the past five days of violence and confirmed that more than 2,000 remain unaccounted for.

There were reports in Nigeria’s media yesterday that the soldiers from Niger and Chad had withdrawn their troops from a Multinational Joint Taskforce based at the military base outside the town following the attack.

Half of the town of Baga was burned by Boko Haram militants in 2013, with almost 200 people killed.

By Sasha Goldstein, New York Daily News – “A 41-year-old Ohio man armed with several knives tried to buy a plane ticket with a fake ID before being gunned down by police after lunging at an officer with a blade outside the Columbus airport, police said.

Hashim Hanif Ibn Abdul-Rasheed had parked illegally outside the ticketing terminal and was acting bizarrely as he tried to buy a ticket to an undisclosed location Wednesday afternoon. He showed off a woman’s ID to try and make the buy at one point before he was rebuffed, cops said.

Airport police called a tow truck to remove the illegally parked vehicle from the departures lane just before 1 p.m. Wednesday when Abdul-Rasheed returned.

‘The man initially spoke with the officer then suddenly produced a knife and lunged at the officer, attempting to stab him,’ the Port Columbus International Airport said in a statement. ‘The officer fired at the suspect, who momentarily dropped to the ground and then got back up and continued advancing towards the officer. A backup officer responded at which point the suspect quickly moved towards him with the knife forcing the officer to retreat backwards towards the terminal entrance where a third officer was positioned. The third officer shot multiple times, striking the suspect, ending the attack.'” Read more.
