Nigeria: Scores Dead After Muslims Detonate Massive Bomb Near Shopping Mall

By Bashir Adigun, The Star – “An explosion blamed on Islamic extremists rocked a shopping mall in Nigeria’s capital on Wednesday and police said at least 21 people have been killed.

The blast in Abuja came as Nigerians were preparing to watch their country’s Super Eagles play Argentina at the World Cup in Brazil. Many shops at the mall have TV screens, but it was unclear if the explosion was timed to coincide with the match, which started an hour later.

Witnesses said body parts were scattered around the exit to Emab Plaza, in Abuja’s upscale Wuse 2 suburb. All spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Billows of black smoke could be seen from a kilometre away.

‘I heard the explosion and (felt) the building shaking,’ said Shuaibu Baba. He said he rushed downstairs to find that the driver who had dropped him a few minutes earlier was dead. ‘I asked the driver to come with me, and he said ‘No,’ he would wait for me in the car.’

Police Superintendent Frank Mba said 17 people were wounded and 21 bodies were recovered.

He also said one suspect has been arrested and investigations have already started.

The government urged calm and said it is doing everything possible ‘to check the activities of insurgents.’

One witness said he thought the bomb was dropped at the entrance to the mall by a motorcyclist, but Mba said it was too early to say.

It is the latest in a series of violent attacks blamed on Islamic extremists. Nigerian security forces appear incapable of curtailing the near-daily attacks concentrated in the northeast, where Boko Haram extremists have their stronghold.” Read more.

By Chaim Lev and Ari Yashar, INN – “The wave of anti-Semitic violence continues to rock French Jewry, as a gang of 20 attackers on Monday reportedly assaulted visibly Jewish students wearing kippot (yarmulkes) at a local library in the capital city of Paris.

The assailants, described by reports as being of North African descent and therefore likely Muslim immigrants, approached the Jewish students from two directions in the library, pouncing on them and beating them until they were bloody.

The Jewish students ran from the scene, and in the process two students were stabbed, leaving them with light wounds.

Security personnel at the library got involved and called up the police, who were able to arrest several of the attackers and bring them in for investigation.

The attack comes after a rally in Paris supporting the three Israel teens who were kidnapped by Hamas terrorists two weeks ago came under attack last Thursday. The anti-Semitic attackers hurled flares at the rally, scattering the participants; several of the attackers were arrested.

The recent attacks are just the latest in a long string of escalating anti-Semitic violence.

Two Saturdays ago, attackers reportedly approached a Paris synagogue in the city’s 20th District armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and a handgun.

According to reports they began aiming their guns at bystanders and the building itself and pretended to open fire, but fled the scene when they saw armed French police officers guarding the synagogue. Reports say they escaped on a scooter.

The Saturday prior to that, two visibly Jewish teenagers wearing kippot report being sprayed with tear gas in Sarcelles, a northern suburb of Paris, by North African assailants. A week before that, two other Jewish teenagers, aged 14 and 15, narrowly escaped an axe-wielding man of Arab appearance in another Paris suburb.” Read more.

By Selim Algar, New York Post – “A Brooklyn cabby was so enraged when his daughter ditched her arranged marriage in Pakistan to be with the man she loved that he had the paramour’s relatives killed, prosecutors charged at the start of his murder-conspiracy trial Monday.

Mohammad Choudhry, 61, ordered his daughter, Amina Ajmal, 24, to marry her cousin, Abrar Ahmed Babar, in Pakistan in 2012 so he could become an American citizen, Brooklyn federal prosecutors said.

But the daughter, a US citizen who attended Brooklyn College, was in love with another man, distant cousin Shujat Abbas, prosecutors said.

Ajmal fled Pakistan in January 2013 and went into hiding in America.

Enraged by the botched union, Choudhry told his daughter in recorded phone calls that he would murder Abbas’ relatives in Pakistan if she refused to come home, prosecutors said.

Running For Their Lives From The “Religion Of Peace”

This Day Live – “United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has lamented that about 650,000 Nigerians have been displaced in many parts of the North as a result of the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

Representative of the body in Nigeria, Ms. Angele Dikongue-Atangana, said in an interview yesterday that an intelligence assessment carried out in May had blamed their displacement on the recent crises in the North-east region.

‘According to an intelligence assessment of North-eastern Nigeria, at least 650,000 persons have been displaced within the boundary of Nigeria. And what is of most concern to the UNHCR in Nigeria today are these internally displaced persons.’

She said her organisation was working hard to establish a regional office in Gombe that would take care of many of the internally displaced persons, adding that the international community and the UN systems in Nigeria are working jointly to provid protection and care for the affected persons.

The representative also disclosed plans by UNHCR to ensure efficient coordination and management of camps for those affected.

‘UNHCR will always support respective states in taking care of internally displaced persons.

‘This is one reason we want to establish an office in Gombe, to be able to cater for the needs of many displaced persons in this part of Nigeria,’ Dikongue-Atangana.” Source – This Day Live.
