By Jethro Mullen, CNN – “Thousands of people in vulnerable areas of the Philippines are being relocated as one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever observed spins toward the country.

With sustained winds of 315 kph (195 mph) and gusts as strong as 380 kph (235 mph), Super Typhoon Haiyan was churning across the Western Pacific toward the central Philippines.

Its wind strength makes it equivalent to an exceptionally strong Category 5 hurricane.

The storm, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, is expected to still be a super typhoon, with winds in excess of 240 kph (149 mph), when it makes landfall Friday morning in the region of Eastern Visayas.

The storm is so large in diameter that clouds from it are affecting two-thirds of the country.

Authorities in the region had moved more than 3,800 people to evacuation centers by late Thursday, Maj. Reynaldo Balido of the Philippine Office of Civil Defense said.

Most of those relocated live in Tacloban City, which sits on the coast of the island of Leyte and has a population of more than 200,000.

In a speech Thursday, President Benigno S. Aquino III warned residents of the ‘calamity our countrymen will face in these coming days.'” Read more.

By Ted Thornhill, Mail Online – “In the Syrian town of Raqqa, Bashar al-Assad’s hated regime has been replaced by something many regard as being even worse – an al-Qaeda-linked group that is torturing people for writing graffiti and abolishing women’s rights.

Raqqa used to be one of the most liberal towns in Syria, but chillingly, the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is using violence to impose their rule on the locals and stamp out the freedoms rebels fought for.

One man showed a TV news channel how he was left with horrific bruises and burns after jihadists beat him and tortured him with an electrical current for spraying graffiti.

This punishment for graffiti was also meted out by the Assad authorities ousted by the revolution, leaving many wondering what it’s all been for.

He told CNN: ‘Every 15 minutes, someone poured water on me, electrocuted me, kicked me, then walked out.’

He went on to describe the anguish he suffered listening to others being tortured.

He added: ‘When a person is tortured in front of you, you feel responsible. That’s the hardest. One guy still inside used to call me Dad as I taught him about democracy.’

Rebels who have voiced their opposition to ISIS have found themselves arrested and thrown in jail without trial.

The town’s women, meanwhile, have been ordered by ISIS via posters to ‘cover up their beauty’, according to CNN, and banned from seeing male doctors or even leaving home without a male relative.

One female activist drew comparisons between the once-liberal Raqqa and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.” Read more.

By Joop Koopman, AINA – “Inhabitants of Sadad, near Homs, who fled the largely Syrian Orthodox town when rebels attacked last month, are now returning home to discover the scale of atrocities in what is being seen as the worst act of anti-Christian persecution since the war in Syria began.

The reports, sent by Church leaders to Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need, describe how, in this ancient Christian town mentioned in the Bible (Ezekiel), vulnerable people unable to escape — including the elderly, disabled, women and children — were subjected to torture, such as strangulation. Church sources say 30 bodies were found in two separate mass graves.

Discovered dead in a well in Sadad were the remains of six members of one family including Matanios El Sheikh, 85, his wife, Habsah, 75, their daughter, Njala, 45, and grandsons Ranim, aged 18, a first-year university student, and his 16-year-old brother Fadi, in class XI at school.

Reports state they were thrown down a well on 26th October along with the boys’ paternal grandmother, 90-year-old Mariam. Their funerals, which took place yesterday (Monday Nov. 4), came as a community, whose town dates back to 2000BC, begins to grieve the loss of those being described as ‘martyrs’ by Church leaders.

The atrocities took place during a week-long occupation of Sadad by the Al-Nusra Front and Daash, rebel forces who, according to Church leaders, held 1,500 families as ‘human shields’ in a bid to stop Government troops retaking the village.

The tragedy in Sadad began Oct. 21 when rebel forces invaded the town and carried out what Syrian Orthodox Archbishop Selwanos Boutros Alnemeh, Syriac Orthodox Metropolitan of Homs and Hama, called the ‘most serious and biggest massacre of Christians’ since the conflict began in Syria in March 2011, the Fides news agency reported.

At least 2,500 families fled with no more than the clothes they were wearing to cities like Homs, 37 miles away, and further afield to Damascus, Al-Fhayle, Maskane, Fayrouza, Zzaydal and elsewhere.

Some who escaped travelled five miles by foot to find shelter.Those unable to flee Sadad were quickly rounded up by the rebels …” Read more.

Stars Falling: Bright Lights In The Sky Reported Across Central And Southern California

By Robert J. Lopez, Los Angeles Times – “The flashes and bright lights that were reported across Central and Southern California on Wednesday night likely were long-lasting meteor streams known as the South Taurids, according to the National Weather Service.

The Taurids are known for having exceptionally bright meteors. On Wednesday night, people used Twitter to describe what resembled a meteor shower, bright lights or fireballs in the sky.

Mary Slosson said she driving eastbound on the 10 Freeway when saw a ‘flareup’ that ‘looked like something burning up upon entry into atmosphere’ over the Culver City area.

The flash of light caused drivers to hit their brakes and swerve to catch a glimpse, Slosson said.

Another person in Hollywood said he saw what appeared to be a ‘pretty substantial fireball in the sky.’

In northern San Diego County, a woman said she saw the ‘sky light up super bright.’

And in Fresno, a woman said she ‘saw something that looked like a huge shooting star falling.'” Source – Los Angeles Times.
