‘They entered the main square and smashed a statue of the Virgin Mary,’ said one resident of the area, speaking by phone and too frightened to give his name. ‘They shelled us from the nearby mountain. Two shells hit the St Thecla convent.’

It is one of only three places in the world where Western Aramaic, a dialect of the language spoken by Christ, is still used.

Until recently, the town had managed to remain mostly unaffected by the civil war that has already claimed more than 100,000 lives. A visit by The Daily Telegraph last year found it ringed by government checkpoints but suffering from the lack of pilgrims and tourists who are normally vital to its economy.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, rebel groups, a mix of the extremist Jabhat al-Nusra and the more moderate Free Syrian Army (FSA), attacked with full force.

‘First they took a brick factory owned by a Christian guy, who is now missing,’ said the resident. ‘Then at around 5.30am, a car bomb detonated at the checkpoint at the entrance to the village.

‘Some of the rebels entered a home near the checkpoint belonging to Yousef Haddad, a Christian. They tried to force him to convert to Islam.’

A nun living in a convent in the village told the Associated press that 27 orphans living in the convent were taken to nearby caves for shelter.

BY DAHIR JIBRIL, allAfrica – “Al-Shabaab’s refusal to allow the supply of the polio vaccine in areas under its control is causing panic among residents at a time when aid workers are struggling to contain an outbreak of the crippling virus.

‘The polio outbreak plaguing Somalia has spread despite significant efforts to curb the disease,’ the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement August 15th, adding that insecurity is hampering efforts to contain the virus.

Six years after Somalia was declared free of the virus, at least 105 cases have been confirmed in the country, the ‘worst outbreak in the world in a non-endemic country’, according to OCHA.

Liban Nur, a 65-year-old traditional elder in the town of Bulo Burde in Hiran region, told Sabahi he was very concerned about the spread of polio since al-Shabaab will not allow the vaccine to be brought to the town.

‘Polio is widespread in the region, and this year alone I have seen more than four children who have been afflicted with polio and have not received any medical attention or the vaccine to prevent polio,’ he said.

‘Recently people have been treating themselves with traditional medicine such as herbs that grow [in Bulo Burde] that they boil and then give the extracted fluid to the children with polio,’ he said. ‘This medicine does not cure anything.’

Nur said it is difficult for families to travel to areas under government control where the vaccine is available because many are hampered by economic constraints.” Read more.

The individual in the clip, Nadeem Baloosh, is a member of an insurgent group called Riyadh Al Abdeen, which is active in the Latakia area of Syria.

Baloosh speaks of ‘chemicals which produce lethal and deadly gases that I possess,’ before going on to state, ‘We decided to harm them through their women and kids.’

Baloosh ponders if it is acceptable to harm women and children before quoting the Koran, ‘Fight them as they fight you.’ He goes on to quote Osama Bin Laden (whom other rebel groups have openly praised).

‘We’ll kill their women and children like Sheikh Osama Bin Laden said – ‘until they cease killing our women and kids,’ he states.

Baloosh goes on to talk about the Syrian Army approaching the area where his rebel group was located, before stating, ‘So we had the idea that this weapon was very powerful and effective to repel them, we announced if they approached one meter, everything is permitted.’

‘We will strike them in their homes, we will turn their day into night and their night into day,’ adds Baloosh.

The footage adds to the increasing weight of evidence that suggests US-backed rebels possess and have used chemical weapons on more than one occasion, although such reports have been habitually downplayed by the mainstream media.
