‘Destroy Idols’: Islamist Leader In Egypt Calls For The ‘Destruction Of The Sphinx And The Giza Pyramids’

Naturally, all like-minded devotees of Islam neglect to make any mention of one of the most blatant examples of idolatry in the world today, a sacred stone they believe that, when touched, will make atonement for their sins: the eastern cornerstone of the Kaaba

By AL ARABIYA – “An Egyptian jihad leader, with self-professed links to the Taliban, called for the ‘destruction of the Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids in Egypt,’ drawing ties between the Egyptian relics and Buddha statues, local media reported this week.

Murgan Salem al-Gohary, an Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, called on Muslims to remove such ‘idols.’

‘All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues,’ he said on Saturday during a television interview on an Egyptian private channel, widely watched by Egyptian and Arab audiences.

‘God ordered Prophet Mohammed to destroy idols,’ he added. ‘When I was with the Taliban we destroyed the statue of Buddha, something the government failed to do.’

His comments came a day after thousands of ultraconservative Islamists gathered in Tahrir Square to call for the strict application of Sharia law in the new constitution.

But in retaliation to Gohary’s remarks, the vice president of Tunisia’s Ennahda party, Sheikh Abdel Fattah Moro, called the live program and told Gohary that famous historic military commander Amr ibn al-Aas did not destroy statues when he conquered Egypt.

‘So who are you to do it?’ he wondered. ‘The Prophet destroyed the idols because people worshiped them, but the Sphinx and the Pyramids are not worshiped.’…

In recent months, fears have surfaced that the ultra-conservative Salafi political powers may soon wish to debate new guidelines over Egyptian antiquities.

Islamists have swept the recent presidential and parliamentary elections in the country’s post-revolutionary stage, with the Muslim Brotherhood and the ultra-conservative Salafi Islamists rising to political power.

‘The fundamental Salafis have demanded to cover Pharaonic statues, because they regard them to be idols,’ Egyptian author on ancient history Ahmed Osman told Al Arabiya English…” Read more.

Flashback: ‘Symbols Of Paganism’: Prominent Muslim Clerics Call Upon Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood To Destroy The Pyramids – “According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt’s Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi‘i, those ‘symbols of paganism,’ which Egypt’s Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax. Most recently, Bahrain’s ‘Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs’ and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to ‘destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not.’” Read more.

ICA – I found this interesting when taken together with Ezk below and we know what happened at Sodom and Gomorrah – God does not need nuclear weapons – I believe that his weapons may well be sitting under ground waiting to be used

Ezek 38:22 I will execute judgment upon him with plague, and bloodshed; I will pour down torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulphur, on him and on many nations with him. 23 And so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

Ezek 39: 6 I will send fire on Magog and on those who live in safety in the coast lands, and they will know; I am the LORD. 7 I will make known my holy name among my people Israel.

      Quite possible, Willard.

Allah is the biggest idol, bigger than than the Kaaba. I’d put Mohammad ahead of the Kaaba too. So the 3 idols of Islam: Allah, Mohammad and the Kaaba.

Revelation 9:20, “And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk”

I mention the Kaaba specifically since it is such an obvious, physical man-made idol regardless of where the “sacred stone” came from. We can also add the Qur’an itself to the list, the city of Mecca, al Aqsa, Masjid al Haram and Al Masjid an-Nabawi.

Yes, I wasn’t criticizing you, just pointing out that the whole system is idolatrous. But being inside it, they are blind to this fact.

“You shall have no other gods before Me.

“You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments…”

Amazing how they think – The Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids’ have stood the test of time thousands of years – the last of one of the seven wonders of the world – they seen the Egyptians, Moses, the Hebrews, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Ottomans, Napoleon, the English, but may not make it through the Muslim Brotherhood

Kurt J., “being inside it, they are blind to this fact.”

Yes, that’s the condition of the Ummah. A loose analogy would be the frog that had been slowly boiled to death, not realizing that where it rested is where its end would come as a result. So, too, does the Ummah remain within Islam, completely unaware that the water in which it stands is heating up quickly and will soon come to a boil. Revelation 16:13-21 comes to mind.

    • 11/12/2012 at 6:30 PM

I too have been thinking about Revelation 16: 13-21, still trying to piece it together. But I read some time back in the old testament and I think God was telling the israelites worshiping idols, that he knew what they were doing, and I thought he said and you who worship your black stone. But I can’t find it again, I didn’t mark it, do you know where that is, I’d like to mark it.

I don’t recall if there is anything mentioning a “black” stone specifically, but Scripture does speak about a “sacred” stone. Here are two references:

Acts 19:35, “And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, ‘Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky?'” (ESV)

In Islam, Muslims “believe that this stone fell from the sky during the time of Adam and Eve, and that it has the power to cleanse worshippers of their sins by absorbing them into itself. They say that the Black Stone was once a pure and dazzling white and it has turned black because of the sins it has absorbed over the years.” (Read more).

Leviticus 26:1, “‘Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the LORD your God.” (NIV)

Muslims face the location of their sacred stone — Mecca — and bow down towards it five times a day, each and every day of their lives. Their idolatry couldn’t be more obvious, despite their assertion that it isn’t “idolatry” and that it isn’t “worship.” It’s almost like a coke addict claiming that snorting cocaine isn’t drug abuse because God gave them the coca plant.

Thank you, I believe it is Leviticus, When I read that I was amazed that there was a warning so explicit from God that warned of a stone, I think I just associated it in my mind with their black stone. I remember thinking at the time, that this one verse should be enough for Christians to know what Islam was. But apparently it’s not. I did not remember studying the verse in acts, but your right about that. It’s amazing isn’t it, all the warnings and evidence in the Bible, and still they won’t turn from their wicked ways. Thanks ICA.

The pyramids are just a pile of rocks, who cares what the Egyptians do to them?

    • 11/12/2012 at 9:18 PM

We can appreciate the pyramids and Sphinx on several levels – artistically, a feat of engineering and for their history. I am not in favor of destroying any historically significant item, whether it was used idolatrously or not. At a minimum it can serve as an object lesson on what NOT to do. Our creativity ultimately comes from a creative God and gives Him glory on that level, no matter what people originally intended.

The pyramids aren’t creative. They are just big triangles. They are stupid and worthless.

The pyramids don’t have a mind, so they can’t be stupid. And they’ve generated millions of dollars for Egypt as a major tourist attraction for decades, so they’re not worthless.

The architectural precision alone is quite impressive.

That blew my mind. It almost makes me think that it couldn’t have been man made. There has to be more to history that what archaeologists know or admit.

You have absalutly no idea what you are talking about – you are blinded by your own conceit – evidently you have never ventured far from home – I have been inside the Giza Pyramid and it is much more than a pile of rocks – it is history, it is a culture, it is engineering, it is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and it shows the ability of what man really once was – it is to be appricated for what it is
