Poll: Belief In The ‘Islamic Messiah’ Widespread In Muslim World, 672 Million Believe The Mahdi Will Soon Appear

Hopefully this will now convince Bible prophecy teachers such as Dr. David Reagan to issue a public apology to Joel Richardson — something that I have encouraged him to do in the past — and acknowledge that the Mahdi is indeed believed by not only the world of Shia Islam, but Sunni as well …

By Joel Richardson – “Over the past several years, I’ve been one of the leading figures warning the church and the Western world concerning the Islamic doctrine of a coming messiah figure known as the Mahdi. In sounding this alarm, I have certainly had my share of critics, not only from the Pollyannas on the left, but also from within the Christian church.

One of my most outspoken critics has been Dr. David Reagan, a well-known prophecy teacher and televangelist. Among Reagan’s many criticisms, one of his most pronounced has been to accuse me of misleading my audience by claiming, as I do, that the Islamic belief in the Mahdi is more than just a Shiite doctrine, that in fact, much of the Sunni world also is expecting the coming of a Mahdi. Reagan’s initial criticism comes as follows:

Richardson’s presentation of what Muslims believe about the end times is very misleading, for what he presents is the Shiite version, which revolves around the concept of an Islamic messiah called the Mahdi. He leaves the impression that all the Islamic world is living in breathless anticipation of the appearance of the Mahdi, when the reality is that 90% of all Muslims – the Sunnis – are not looking for a Mahdi.

Several other critics not familiar with Islamic doctrine have since parroted Reagan’s claims. In response, I’ve repeatedly cited numerous modern and classical Muslim scholars who state unequivocally that belief in the Mahdi is, in fact, a universal doctrine for all Muslims.

But apart from citing these various Muslim scholars and my own anecdotal experiences over the past decade reaching out to Muslims, disproving this claim – that 90 percent of all Muslims reject belief in the Mahdi – has not been easy to do. Until now.

Last week, Pew Research firm released a comprehensive study of opinions among Muslims, and one of the questions was related to the Mahdi!

Now, for the first time, a comprehensive study including tens of thousands of Muslims in more than 23 countries asked if they believed the Mahdi’s emergence was imminent and that it would occur within their lifetimes. The results conclusively prove that which I have been warning about all along.

Below is an image of the Pew Research firm’s findings, nation by nation:

Obviously, the false claim that a mere 10 percent of the Islamic world is awaiting the Mahdi may now be satisfactorily put to bed. The bottom line is that it is far worse, far more widespread than even I would have guessed.

Analyzing the information, scholar of Islamic history Timothy Furnish makes the following important observations on his blog:

  • Of the 23 countries whose Muslim citizens were polled, nine have majorities which expect the Mahdi in their lifetimes.
  • The overall average percentage of Muslims globally who believe in the imminent return of the Mahdi: 41.8 percent
  • Extrapolating this data means of the 1.6 billion Muslims globally, 672 million Muslims expect the Mahdi’s imminent return!
  • The average is higher for Sunni majority nations: 45 percent!
  • Despite the conventional wisdom, three of the four countries with the highest percentage expecting the Mahdi are majority-Sunni ones: Afghanistan (83 percent), Turkey (68 percent) and Tunisia (67 percent).

Furnish then states: ‘Bottom-line: Mahdism is a far stronger and more-widely held belief than even I had thought – and I’ve been preaching its pervasiveness for years.’

Adding to Furnish’s observations, it is also important to observe that 68 percent of Turks, a large majority, are expecting the imminent appearance of the Mahdi. Turkey, of course, is the nation that I believe will produce the Antichrist.

Certainly the popularity of Mahdism within Turkey, when combined with the concurrent radical rise in 1) Turkish nationalism and Neo-Ottoman aspirations, and 2) anti-Semitism within Turkey, in so many ways, sets the stage for this nation to move toward fulfilling many of the last days prophecies of the Bible.

Another important point I have been trying to make for years is, although conventional wisdom has placed all emphasis on Iran as the nation that would produce a false Mahdi claimant (I say claimant, as there actually is no such thing as the Mahdi), the real danger lies with the Sunni world.

The primary reason for this is because while the leaders of Iran regularly make a lot of noise concerning the Mahdi – often referred to by them as the 12th Imam – there are some very strong reasons that it is highly unlikely that Iran will ever see a genuine Mahdi claimant figure arise. What outsiders must understand is that Iranian Muslim scholars have developed a very thorough systematic theology to essentially guard against any false Mahdi claimant from emerging. The 12-er Shi’a sect that dominates the nation of Iran is expecting a very specific person to return. 12-er Shi’a also look to the Mahdi as being almost omniscient and omnipotent. In order for any man to suddenly arrive and to actually be received as their Mahdi would be nothing short of impossible. I do not believe Iran will ever produce Mahdi claimant who will be received widely by the leaders or the people of that nation..

On the other hand, there is a certain fluidity among Sunni Mahdist traditions and prophecies that could very easily be manipulated. When one considers how loose Sunni traditions are concerning the Mahdi, it is not difficult to imagine a significant leader gaining a reputation and developing a massive grassroots following, all the while never even claiming to be the Mahdi. In fact, throughout Islamic history, several significant Mahdi claimants have arisen and gathered a significant following. They have all been Sunni Muslims.

In my book, ‘Islamic Antichrist: The Shocking Truth about the Real Nature of the Beast,’ I walk the alert reader through the frightening world of Islamic apocalyptic views, comparing them with the biblical prophecies concerning the coming of the Antichrist, showing beyond any doubt that in the Islamic doctrine of the Mahdi, the world should be very concerned. In my new book, ‘Mideast Beast,’ I demonstrate beyond any doubt, the scriptural case for an Islamic Antichrist. As always, it is time for the Christian world to wake up and fall to their knees in prayer. The hour is far later than most think.” Source – WND.

The Islamic Antichrist is the only one that makes any sence. The Pope’s edicts are largely ignored by the masses. It is Islam that has in ages past, and continues to this day,to kill those who refuse to bow to Allah. It is Mecca, not Rome, that sits on 7 MOUNTAINS, NOT HILLS! It is Mecca that is in the desert, not Rome. It is Mecca that can be seen by the shipping merchants that are on the sea, NOT ROME. This is why Yeshua said: “If they tell you that I am IN THE DESERT< DO NOT GO!" I think that it was John that was taken to a place in the desert and shown things that would come to pass in the end of days. I will look it up and post again when I get home from work. The facts line up with an Islamic Antichrist, not a european one.
It is only Islam that beheads people who refuse to convert. It is Islam that has, in writing, on the Temple Mount, saying….."G-d has no son!" It is Muslims that kill by beheading, thinking that they are doing their god a service. Their shout of "Allah hu akbar," Allah is greater. This is clear evidence that their killing are acts of faith and are sacrifices to their god.

Wow wow wow, really Denise? Islam kills people who refuse to bow to Allah? Ever heard of Charlemagne? The Spanish Conquistadors? Killing those who refuse to convert to Christianity? I can get into wayy more detail. Expelling those from their lands because they refused to convert to Christianity? You are delusional, ill informed and then foolishly take the responsibility of “informing” others? Your zealotry is alarming. During the first caliphate (which Muslims refer to as the truest of Muslims) when Syria was conquered, what happened to the Christians and Jews there? Following Syria, after the Byzantines were driven from Jerusalem…what happened to the Christians and Jews? Your venomous posts must be ridiculed. Only Islam kills in the name of god? what grossly stinking bull sh*t are you trying to feed here? You claim to be Jewish but ignore the Spanish Inquisition? Almost EVERY religion was spread by the sword Judaism (Hasmonean dynasty) Christianity and Islam.

What’s wrong with believing God has no son? This is in Islamic belief and written within the confines of the Dome of Rock, Does your zealotry blind you from your hypocrisy? You claim that Islam is intolerant of all religions yet you cannot tolerate the fact that Islam believes God has no son? You force your beliefs that God has promised the Jews Israel on those who have been living in the holy land for over a thousand years? Look at yourself spewing hate on others while dismissing your own faults.

Logic would suggest how paradoxical the claim of god having a “son” is despite this concept being his creation as everything in this world – however that is my opinion and I won’t enforce it upon anyone.

        Guy,
may I point out that my comment was in response to an article about the wide spread belief in an end times, Islamic antichrist, and not the spanish inquisition. Always remember that context is king.
As for my spewing hate; when exactly, did factual statements become hate speech? May i remind you of 911, Fort Hood, the murders of Nick Berg and Daniel Pearl. Murdered, beheaded, and then their murderers posted their wicked deeds on the internet. They were killed for the crime of being Jewish. I piety you, because somewhere you have lost the ability to recognize evil, and to call it by name.
As for G-d having a Son; the day will come, when you sir, regardless of your “opinions,” will bow your knees before Jesus, and confess that He is G-d, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. I just pray that you will humble yourself before the G-d of Jacob, before it is too late, and gratefully accept the free gift of forgiveness. It is the blood of G-d’s Son that was shed on your behalf, and it is only through Him that you and I can be saved, and receive eternal life.

Denise, that is a great comment. BUT Rome does sit on 7 mountains, hills. East of the Tiber river. Have you ever studied the 8Kings.? You might have a different opinion about the Pope.

      Hi P.D.Fox,
That is my point….In scripture it is 7 mountains, not hills. If it were hills then Providence Rhode Island would be a contender.

The seven hills of early walled city of Rome are, the Cermalus, Cispius, Fagutal, Oppius, Palatium, Sucusa and Velia. Of the seven hills of current Rome, five Aventine, Caelian, Esquiline, Quirinal and Viminal hills) are populated with monuments, buildings, and parks. The Capitoline now hosts the Municipality of Rome, and the Palatine Hill is an archaeological area. The now-famous Vatican Hill is northwest of the Tiber and is not one of the original Seven Hills of Rome.

How do we explain these seven hills or mountains on which this woman sits if they are not the hills of Rome? This has to be an organization because a woman herself cannot sit on seven hills at one time. So it has to be a power base a kingdom of some kind. Hills and mountains are sometimes referred to as rulers or kings in the bible.

Most do not realize or understand that Mecca also is surrounded by seven mountains, not hills. The names of them are as follows. Jabal in Arabic mean’s mountain and the names of the seven mountains around Mecca are Jabal Quba, Jabal Al-Qinaa, Jabal Li Aali, Jabal Jifan, Jabal Jiyad, Jabal Abi Qubais, and Jabal Hindi.

Revelation tells us that it is the beast itself that had the seven heads and the ten horns. So the key here it seems to me is the beast itself, who or what is the beast and therefore we must determine exactly who this beast is and where this beast comes from. The angel tells John that she will explain the mystery to him. The beast this woman is riding once was but now is not, so if it IS NOT than it cannot be Rome because Rome was in John’s day when he wrote the book of Revelations. If it is not Rome than it certainly does become a mystery if we do not look beyond Rome.

John was looking back when he said that the beast also once was in Rev 17:8 just before he said that NOW IT WAS NOT. I am convinced that he is speaking about Greece – Alexander and his four generals and the Greek ruler of Assyria Antiochus who in 167 BC desecrated the temple by slaughtering a pig on Gods alter and setting up a statue of his god.

Is it not a bit suspect that every nation once ruled by Alexander and his four generals today including much of the Balkans is today Islamic??

These same territories today Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraqi, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Turkmenistan that the Seleucids ruled than, are all Muslim countries today. We know how much that these countries today love Israel and the rest of the world especially the Western world

There are two symbols that I find intriguing in the Greek rulers. 1) Alexander is depicted in Dan 7 and 8 as a goat – in fact there are coins showing his picture with a goats horn on the side of his head. Satan is often also depicted as a goat ?? Antiochus name begins with (Anti) which may or may not mean anything but just an observation.

    NOTE ON THE GREEKS

I also find it interesting that once again just before the appearance of the A/C that they Greece the home of Democracy which all of the Arab Spring nations are screaming for are on the scene of making world history. This time with possibly of the financial crash of the worlds economy and the cry for ME Democracy bringing to power the A/C.

Ancient historians tell us that Alexander the Great died at age of 33 in 323 BC his four generals divided his empire and assumed control of different parts. His four generals were Lysimachus, Cassander, Seleucus, and Ptolemy. Lysimachus received Thrace and most of Asia Minor. Cassander obtained Macedonia and Greece. Ptolemy was given Egypt, Palestine, Cilicia, Petra, and Cyprus while Seleucus controlled the rest of Asia: Syria, Babylon, Persia, and India the part know today as Pakistan.

Looking into these four generals they connect directly with the future Islamic nations and the following must be pointed out how exact Daniel and John prophesised regards these ten horns with ten crowns who will become the ten Muslin nations or the eighth empire coming out of the historic seven empires in the last days are, to the smallest detail. Every one of these four generals territory turned into Muslin territories or nations today.

Cassander obtained Macedonia and Greece which are areas North of Greece Macedonia, Albania Kosovo, Bosnia (Balkans) where the first WWI began all having very large Muslim populations some areas have 80 to 95 percent Muslin populations. Even though this part of the world will not be a part of the ten nation Muslim Empire it still connects back to Alexander and his four generals which also basically was his home land.

As per historical records the Roman Legion V came from today’s Serbia, Bulgaria and Macedonia area which was the only Legion from Eastern Europe that was involved in the destruction of the second temple in 70 AD. This Legion V land mass was once ruled by Cassander one of Alexander’s generals and one of these four horns of Alexander in the book of Daniel. They were a part of all of the people who originated out of Alexander and his four generals who were involved in the temples destruction, fulfilling the prophecies of Daniel, John and Zechariah with amazing accuracy.

The exactness of both Daniels and Johns prophetic words regarding the four horns and the ten horns with the ten crowns and seven heads who are seven kings are so exact that there simply is no room for doubt. When they speak about the four horns and the ten horns with ten crowns and the seven heads coming out of the four horns of Alexander who were the above generals whose off spring people and the DNA gene pool are today’s Muslims covering these ten Middle Eastern Muslim nations and parts of Eastern Europe today, it all points to the anti Christ coming out of the ancient Greek Middle East. And let there be no doubt the Little Horn that will come up from amongst these nations will also be Muslim who will very likely be the one that they call the Mahdi.

Alexander’s general Lysimachus, received Thrace and most of Asia Minor which today is the Muslim territory of Turkey, Bulgaria, parts of Macedonia which also have very large Muslim populations. Ptolemy was given Egypt, Palestine, Cilicia, Petra, and Cyprus while Seleucus controlled the rest of Asia: Syria, Babylon, Persia, Afghanistan, and India or today’s Pakistan. Again all of this territory has and is basically 100 percent Muslim or Islamic. All very anti Israel seeking total destruction of the Jewish people and the land of Israel and Judah which includes the Temple Mount the hinge pin that all prophecy swings on.

      Jahan,
The commets about the Islamic expectations reguarding the Madhi are not intended to be hateful, they are intended to inform. From your comment it would appear that you are a Muslim. As a Jewish believer in Messiah Jesus, I encourge you to pray to the GOD of Abraham to reveal Himself to you, and to lead you to the path that leads to everlasting life.
There is only one G-d and everything hinges on knowing for certain who is the real G-d and who is the real messiah. One is G-d and the other is Satan. May the G-d of Jacob bless you if you choose to take this awesome journey with Him.
