‘Faulty And Unfair’: Egyptian Court Gives 12 Christians Life Sentences As It Acquits 8 Muslims Of Wrongdoing

05/21/2012 Leave a comment

Associated Press – “CAIRO – An Egyptian court sentenced 12 Christians to life in prison and acquitted eight Muslims on Monday in a case set off by religious tensions in the country’s south.

The Christians were found guilty of sowing public strife, the possession of illegal weapons and shooting dead two Muslims in April of last year in Minya province, about 220 kilometers (135 miles) south of Cairo.

The religious tension in Minya spilled over into violence last year when a Muslim microbus driver, angered by a speed bump outside a wealthy Christian man’s villa, got into a scuffle with security guards who beat him.

After returning to his village of Abu Qurqas that evening, he rounded up the villagers who then gathered outside an ultraconservative Islamist group’s main office there to protest his beating. According to rights researcher Ishak Ibrahim, the Christians nearby thought they were going to be attacked and shot from their rooftops down at the crowd, killing two and wounding two others.

For several days after, angry villagers torched dozens of Christian homes and stores.

The eight Muslims on trial in the same case had been charged with possession of illegal weapons and burning down the Christian-owned homes and stores after the shooting.

‘The fact that the Muslims were acquitted means that the attorney general’s investigation from the beginning was faulty and unfair because there was evidence to prove these men had burned Christian property,’ Ibrahim said.

The State Security Court, whose rulings cannot be appealed, handed down its sentence on Monday.” Read more.

Flashback: In the New Egypt, It’s ‘Punish the Victim and Crush the Innocent’ – “The Copts are the Christians of Egypt who represent about 12% of Egypt’s 84 million people. Over the past two weeks, a new and ugly campaign has been waged against Copts. At least eight Coptic families have been evicted from their homes in the al-Nahda village, Amereyah, near Alexandria, following unconfirmed accusations against a Copt of having an affair with a Muslim woman. Even though the accused quickly surrendered himself to the police for investigation, some 5000 village people, incited by Salafists and other Islamist groups, went on a violent rampage, collectively punishing the few Coptic families that live in the area, burning and ransacking their houses and their property. To make things worse, a ‘council’ dominated by these Islamists was convened, in the presence of and approval of the area’s chief of the police. This ‘council’ decided to evict eight families from the village.” Read more.

Yet Again: Hundreds Of Islamists In Indonesia Brutally Attack Christians Gathering For Sunday Worship

Matthew 10:22, “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”

By Mathias Hariyadi, AsiaNews.it – “Jakarta (AsiaNews) – A mob of Islamic extremists struck again the prayer house of the Hkbp Filadelfia Protestant community (Protestant Christian Batak Church) in Bekasi, a suburb of Jakarta (West Java), despite the presence of the police deployed to defend Christian worship. The assault took place yesterday morning, while the faithful gathered for Sunday celebrations. On May 17, coinciding with the feast of the Ascension of Jesus, the place of worship was attacked, during which the fundamentalists hurled stones and bags full of urine against the faithful…

Local witnesses report that yesterday – on the arrival of the Faithful – a group of extremists blocked access to the ‘Church Street’, forcing people to abandon their motorcycles and cover the last part of the journey to the place of worship on foot . The police were deployed around the perimeter of the building, to allow the smooth running of the function, but a crowd of about 400 extremists ‘surrounded’ the area and started to rant against members of religious minority.

Among the fundamentalist group there were not only men but also women and children. After the threats came blows. The crowd began to throw water, sewage, used oil, mud, rotten eggs, sticks and other blunt objects. A ‘brutal’ attack aggravated by the presence of a swarm of ‘infiltrators’ who has passed the cordon of officers and attacked the faithful of the Christian community the ‘from within’.

Reached by AsiaNews, the Rev. Palti H. Panjaitan Sth – head of the Protestant community Hkbp Filadelfia – emphasized that ‘what scares us most is that the number of police was so small compared to the angry mob.’ He adds that ‘it is clear that they did not have the strength to repel the attackers’ and journalists, activists and lawyers who fight in defence of human rights can do nothing either.” Source – AsiaNews.it.

Spectacular Photos Of Yesterday’s Annular Eclipse From Around The World

05/21/2012 2 comments

By ROB WAUGH, Mail Online – “The moon slowly ‘bit into’ the sun, creating incredible visual effects such as a golden heart gleaming through branches in Los Angeles as the world watched an annular eclipse – a partial eclipse where the moon appears smaller than the sun.

The annular eclipse, in which the moon passes in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges, created incredible visual effects around the world – and photographers let their technical imaginations run wild with ‘trick’ shots such as this heart-shaped sun.

The ‘classic’ view of an annular eclipse is as a burning ring. In the U.S., viewing parties were held at observatories in Reno, Nevada, and Oakland, California, and elsewhere. In some areas, special camera filters for taking photographs have been sold out for weeks in anticipation of the big event.” Click here to view all photos.

India: Thousands Of ‘The Most Resilient Species Of Fish’ Found Dead Along The Mula-Mutha River

05/21/2012 Leave a comment

Pune Mirror – “The problem of fish dying in large numbers has come to the fore of the banks of the Mula-Mutha (Bheema) rivers again. Fish have been found dead along the banks of the Mula-Mutha because of rising pollution and the latest in the series was recorded at Hatvalan near the Pune-Daund border last week.

Since last week, thousands of Mozambique Tilapia fishes were found dead on the river banks at Hatvalan in Daund division, about 76 km from Pune.

The fish apparently died because of thick blackish water flowing in the river bed. Ironically, Mozambique Tilapia is considered as one of the most resilient species of fish, known to withstand unfriendly environmental conditions.

To make matters worse, the same dead fish were taken to market to be sold by local fishermen…

Dr Ashok Rasage, taluka medical officer of Daund, said, ‘For a week, large numbers of fish were found on the river banks. We have sent them and the samples of water to the state health laboratory and are waiting for the lab report.’

Dr Sudhakar Kokane, district health officer, also confirmed the incident but said he would get more information from officials.” Read more.

Obama Administration: Rising Christian Slaughter In Nigeria Is A Simple Misunderstanding

05/21/2012 Leave a comment

Romans 13:3, “Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”

Unless your name is Barack Hussein Obama. Amazing, isn’t it, how someone who openly claims to be a “Christian” can effortlessly turn a blind eye to the root of this ongoing, deliberate and systematic persecution of Christians. When he said “the rise of the oceans” would begin to slow during his Presidency, he obviously wasn’t referring to the rising tide of Christian persecution …

By Steve Peacock, WND – “The violence in northern Nigeria is mistakenly viewed as a religious conflict rather than simply a tribal dispute over land, according to the Obama administration.

Despite the ongoing Muslim destruction of churches and the slaughter of Christians – including many murdered during worship services – the U.S. Agency for International Development claims that the misunderstandings make it difficult to administer aid programs.

USAID, therefore, has launched a program titled Project PEACE – an acronym for Programming Effectively Against Conflict and Extremism.

PEACE says it will hire contractors to help the agency analyze the ‘true’ causes of conflict and consequently provide more effective humanitarian and conflict-resolution assistance, according to planning documents that WND located via database research.

The cost of Obama’s new ‘knowledge generation, dissemination and management’ initiative is $600 million.

The unveiling of PEACE comes as the slaughter of Nigerian Christians is on the rise.” Read more.

Flashback: Obama’s Christian Problem – White House Overlooks Christian Persecution While Pandering to Islam – “The Obama administration has been obsessed with Muslim outreach and recently tried to mend fences with the Jewish community. Given the state of the world, however, the White House ought to be focused on helping the world’s oppressed Christians. The United States has been wary to intervene in matters affecting Christians in the Middle East for fear of validating terrorist narratives that the West is engaged in a new crusade against Islam. The result of this passive policy has been to allow Islamic extremists increasingly to dominate the debate, often with tragic consequences.” Read more.

Flashback: Washington Times: Obama Administration Silent While Saudi Grand Mufti Targets Christianity, ‘Ignores These Types Of Provocations At Its Peril’ – “If the pope called for the destruction of all the mosques in Europe, the uproar would be cataclysmic. Pundits would lambaste the church, the White House would rush out a statement of deep concern, and rioters in the Middle East would kill each other in their grief. But when the most influential leader in the Muslim world issues a fatwa to destroy Christian churches, the silence is deafening.” Read more.

‘The Place Turned Into Hell’: Suicide Bombing Kills Nearly 100 Soldiers In Yemen

05/21/2012 3 comments

Revelation 6:8a, “And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him …”

Sky News – “A suicide bomber has killed at least 96 people and wounded more than 220 in an attack on a battalion of soldiers in the Yemeni capital Sanaa.

The bomber, who was dressed in military uniform, blew himself up in the middle of the battalion as they were rehearsing for a parade the following day.

Yemen’s defence minister and chief of staff were present but neither was hurt. They had arrived just a few minutes earlier to greet the troops.

The parade was to mark the 22nd anniversary of the unification of north and south Yemen and was due to be attended by the country’s president.

The soldiers were rehearsing in Sanaa’s al Sabeen Square where the government often holds large military events, close to the presidential palace.

The attack is the most deadly in Yemen since President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi took power in February with a pledge to fight al Qaeda’s growing presence in the county.

The blast ripped through the area, killing more than 90 soldiers and injuring hundreds more.

Those that survived the blast ran to safety in fear of another attack.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and ferried the injured to seven hospitals in the capital.

‘This is a real massacre,’ said Ahmed Sobhi, one of the soldiers who witnessed the explosion.

‘There are piles of torn body parts, limbs, and heads. This is unbelievable. I am still shaking. The place turned into hell. I thought this only happens in movies.'” Read more.

Former Finance Minister: Greece Crisis Threatens To ‘Open Door To Hell’, Could Cause Bank Run Across Continent

05/21/2012 Leave a comment

By Joel Hills, Sky News – “Greece’s former finance minister has told Sky News that if Greece reneges on its bailout deal with the EU and the IMF it will ‘open the door to hell’.

Sky News last interviewed George Papaconstantinou two-and-a-half years ago.

In December 2009 he told how Greece could survive independently and Greece’s creditors had nothing to fear – they would get back every euro they were owed.

A lot has changed since then.

Greece is in the process of borrowing 240bn euros of emergency loans from the EU and the IMF (in return for pledges to raise taxes, cut spending and balance the books) and investors holding Greek debt have been forced write off up to 50% of their money.

Even now Greece remains heavily in debt, deep in recession (now in its fifth year) and without a functioning elected government.

Mr Papaconstantinou lost his position as finance minister last summer, shortly after the second bailout package was agreed.

In the general election, two weeks ago, he also lost his seat as an MP. He was not alone as support for his Pasok party collapsed.

The result of the election was inconclusive and, ultimately, no party was able to form a coalition government. In four weeks’ time Greece will vote again.

The opinion polls suggest that were an election to be held tomorrow the result would, once again be inconclusive, but the Syriza party, which is promising to ‘tear up’ the bailout agreement with the EU and the IMF, continues to attract support…

Interestingly, he admits there are elements of the bailout deal that he would seek to renegotiate but he says if Greece were to do what Syriza’s leader, Alexis Tsipras, is proposing and fail to honour the promises the country has made in return for emergency funding then the results would be disastrous.

‘The extremist parties are lying to the Greek people because they are not telling them that reneging on the agreement means that you have opened the door to hell,’ he said.” Read more.

EU banks fear a Greek exit could cause bank run across continent – “… the continent’s financial system remains vulnerable to the prospect that stampedes of customers could yank their deposits from institutions perceived as shaky. That threat was shoved into the spotlight last week when customers withdrew more than €700 million from Greek banks in a single day… If Greece leaves the eurozone, it will almost certainly restrict bank customers from moving their money out of the country. That could prompt depositors in struggling countries such as Spain and Portugal to … pre-emptively transfer their funds out of their countries to avoid having their savings converted into rapidly devalued Spanish pesetas and Portuguese escudos. ‘That’s what markets are starting to worry about,’ Bodereau said. ‘It takes you to a whole different level of liquidity crisis.'” Read more.

World Health Organisation To Declare Global Polio Emergency As Disease Surges In Pakistan, Afghanistan And Nigeria

05/21/2012 1 comment

By Rob Crilly, The Telegraph – “This year has seen a decline in cases but health officials say they have only half the funding they need to wipe out the disease in its last three remaining havens — Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

Sona Bari, spokeswoman for the polio eradication programme at the World Health Organisation, said the world faced a ‘now or never’ moment.

Failing to stamp out the disease could mean recent gains are reversed and as many as 200,000 children crippled by polio in the next decade.

‘We are really on a tipping point between success and failure,’ she said.

The first polio vaccine was developed in the 1950s and a second version — given orally — is credited with reducing cases by more than 99 per cent.

However, efforts to eradicate the disease completely have stalled in recent years.

In 2011 a surge in the disease was reported across Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria, with 650 cases around the world.

So far this year, India has been declared polio free and the first four months of the year have seen cases drop substantially in the three endemic countries — offering a real chance that polio could now be wiped out if health officials secure $1bn to meet their target of $2bn for the year ahead.

The issue will be discussed by ministers of health from around the world at a meeting of the World Health Assembly which begins in Geneva on Monday.

They are expected to declare a global health emergency, attracting extra funding and possibly also allowing polio-free countries to vaccinate people arriving at airport terminals from affected countries.

Each of the three countries has its own problems. In Nigeria a fragmented health care system makes it difficult to deliver vaccines, while Afghanistan and Pakistan are struggling with conflicts that put children beyond the reach of health workers.

In Pakistan, hardliners have repeatedly told parents the programmes are part of an American plot to make Muslims infertile.” Read more.

Hawaii Responds To Arizona’s Obama Birth Records Request

05/21/2012 Leave a comment

Hmmm… I thought that the state of Hawaii already issued Barack Obama’s “official” long-form birth certificate? If this were indeed the case, I would have expected this to be Hawaii’s response to Arizona, but the fact that they’re asking Arizona to prove why they need confirmation of Obama’s Hawaiian birth suggests that the “official” release in 2011 may not have been as “official” as initially suggested …

By Andrew Michalscheck, AZFamily.com – “PHOENIX — The state of Hawaii has responded to Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett’s request for proof that President Barack Obama was in fact born in the Aloha State.

The Hawaii attorney general’s office has reportedly told Bennett that there are steps he needs to take in order to confirm President Obama’s birth records.

Those steps include Bennett proving that he legitimately needs confirmation in order to update the records at his office.

Bennett recently said in an interview with KFYI that he had asked Hawaii to further verify the President’s birth.

Bennett said he would consider removing President Obama’s name from the ballot during this year’s presidential election if Hawaii didn’t fulfill his request.

Bennett stated that he is not a ‘birther,’ and believes that President Obama was born in the United States.

He went on to explain that he had received about 1,200 emails from Arizona voters who are concerned about President Obama’s birth records, and felt it was his duty to follow up.

President Obama released his birth certificate last year after some people questioned whether he was actually born in Hawaii.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been investigating the President’s birth certificate since last August. Arpaio has said that his investigation is still ongoing.” Source – AZFamily.com.

Iranian Commander Reiterates Need Fully Annihilate The ‘Cancerous Tumor’ Called Israel, ‘The Zionist Regime … Will Be Cut’

05/21/2012 Leave a comment

By Rachel Hirshfeld, INN – “Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi said that threats and sanctions will not deter the Islamic Republic from ‘its revolutionary causes and ideals,’ and stressed that the regime will remain committed to the full annihilation of the Jewish state, the Fars News Agency (FNA) reported on Monday.

Addressing a defense-related gathering in Tehran on Sunday, General Firouzabadi asserted that nations must confront ‘the threats and dangers posed by the Zionist regime of Israel,’ the news agency reported.

He highlighted the emphasis placed by Iran’s supreme leader on the necessity of supporting ‘the oppressed Palestinian nation and its causes.’

‘The Iranian nation is standing for its cause that is the full annihilation of Israel,’ Firouzabadi said.

FNA noted that, ‘The top military official reminded the gatherers [sic] that the Iranian Supreme Leader considers defending Palestine as a full religion duty and believes that any kind of governance and rule by anyone other than the Palestinians is an instance of usurpation.’

Earlier this year, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei stressed Iran’s direct involvement in the ‘Palestinian’ and Lebanese confrontations with Israel.

‘Wherever Iran interfered, it announces it in a very straightforward manner. For instance, we interfered in confrontations against Israel, which resulted in the (Lebanese) victory in the 330 day war and (Palestinians’ victory in) the 22 day (Gaza) war,’ Khamenei said, addressing a crowd of worshippers at Tehran University in February.

‘In the future too, we will support and help everyone who opposes the Zionist regime,’ he said,

‘The Zionist regime is a real cancerous tumor that should be cut and will be cut, God willing,’ he added.” Source – INN.
