‘Epidemic’: Washington State Health Officials Now Seeking Help From CDC As Cases Of Whooping Cough Soars

By Associated Press – “SEATTLE — Washington state’s worst outbreak of whooping cough in decades has prompted health officials to declare an epidemic, seek help from federal experts and urge residents to get vaccinated amid worry that cases of the highly contagious disease could spike much higher.

It’s the first state to declare a whooping cough, or pertussis, epidemic since 2010, when California had more than 9,000 cases, including 10 deaths. Washington has had 10 times the cases reported in 2011, and so has Wisconsin with nearly 2,000 cases this year, though that state has not declared an epidemic.

California responded to its crisis two years ago with a public information campaign, readily available vaccines and a new law requiring a booster shot for middle- and high-school students. Doctors were urged to spot whooping cough early, send infected babies to the hospital and promptly treat those diagnosed. In 2011, the number of cases there dropped significantly.

In Washington, about 1,280 cases have been reported in 2012, and officials believe the state could see as many as 3,000 cases by year’s end. Health Secretary Mary Selecky declared the epidemic April 3, and since then officials have bought up the vaccine and made it available for free for people who don’t have insurance.

State officials have asked hospitals to vaccinate every adult who goes home with a new baby, and urged businesses to encourage their employees to get the adult booster shot. Washington already requires a booster shot for middle- and high-school students.” Read more.

Egypt: Christian Father Fights For Daughter Abducted By Islamists, ‘Become A Muslim And We’ll Spare Your Life’

“Washington, D.C. May 8 (ICC) – “‘We don’t know if our daughter is still alive,’ Magda told ICC during a recent visit to Egypt. ‘We haven’t seen or heard from her in five years… Her kidnapper called us and said she was dead and buried.’

Mary disappeared in June 2007, but to her mother, Magda, it feels like only yesterday that she was sleeping peacefully in her own bed under the loving care of her parents. For those who lose a child, as Magda had, the pain never goes away.

‘There were no warning signs. There was nothing we could do, but the guilt doesn’t go away. If only we could have known [what would happen],’ Magda explained while fighting back tears.

The abduction took place on an ordinary Thursday evening. After school, Mary went out with friends for pizza and a movie. While sipping cocoa at a restaurant, Mary began to feel dizzy and sick. ‘You go ahead and go home,’ said Nahla, a Muslim girl. ‘The rest of us want to go to the cinema.’ Nahla was new to Mary’s group of friends; they had only known her a few weeks.

Mary left the group to catch a bus home alone. This was the last time her friends would see her. No one knows what happened next, but Mary was gone.

Mary’s friends and parents believe Nahla had something to do with it; perhaps she was an accomplice to Mary’s abductors who put drugs in Mary’s drink. Although this suspicion has yet to be confirmed, after Mary’s disappearance, Nahla was nowhere to be found.

Mary’s parents stayed up throughout the night waiting anxiously for their daughter’s return. Mary’s father filed a report at the police station the next morning. He stayed at the station the entire day, determined to see that an investigation was being carried out. Late that afternoon, the police told him they had found his daughter.

Mary was escorted along with several other women into the station by four men in Islamic dress with long beards. The men were Salafis, a group that follows the strict doctrine of Wahhabi Islam from Saudi Arabia. Mary was covered head to toe in a burka. ‘[My husband] recognized her by her shoes,’ Magda told ICC.

Two armed policemen stood by, watching the father’s every move. When he called Mary by name, a Muslim man hit her in the face. There was no answer.

Then he tried to grab his daughter, but she was quickly taken away by the police. The father yelled after her while struggling desperately to free himself from the grip of the police officers who were holding him down. It was no use. Mary was forced in the back of a van and driven away.

‘I went back to the police station that night with my son,’ Magda said. ‘They cursed us and humiliated us. They treated us very badly.’

The parents soon began receiving threatening e-mails and phone calls. ‘Become a Muslim and we’ll spare your life,’ one caller said. ‘Pay a £6,000 ransom or your daughter is dead,’ said another. One caller told Magda that Mary had been killed and buried.

‘Look at me. I’m dying inside,’ Mary’s father told BBC. ‘Jesus Christ gave me my daughter. He gave her to me, not to them.'” Read more.

‘Jihad! Jihad!’: The New Face Of Egypt’s Political Landscape

By Raymond Ibrahim, Frontpagemag.com – “Considering Egypt’s presidential elections take place later this month, last weekend’s Islamist clash with the military could not have come at a worse time.

First, the story: due to overall impatience—and rage that the Salafi presidential candidate, Abu Ismail, was disqualified (several secular candidates were also disqualified)—emboldened Islamists began to gather around the Defense Ministry in Abbassia, Cairo, late last week, chanting jihadi slogans, and preparing for a ‘million man’ protest for Friday, May 4th.

As Egypt’s Al Ahram put it, ‘Major Egyptian Islamist parties and groups—including the Muslim Brotherhood, the Salafist Calling and Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya—have issued calls for a Tahrir Square demonstration on Friday under the banner of ‘Saving the revolution.’ … Several non-Islamist revolutionary groups, meanwhile, have expressed their refusal to participate in the event.’ In other words, last Friday was largely an Islamist protest (even though some in the Western media still portray it as a ‘general’ demonstration).

There, in front of the Defense Ministry, the Islamists exposed their true face—exposed their hunger for power, their unpatriotic motivations, and their political ineptitude. For starters, among those leading the protests was none other than Muhammad al-Zawahiri, a brother of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, and a seasoned jihadi in his own right, who was only recently acquitted and released from prison, where, since 1998, he was incarcerated ‘on charges of undergoing military training in Albania and planning military operations in Egypt.’

Before the Friday protest, Zawahiri appeared ‘at the head of hundreds of protesters,’ including ‘dozens of jihadis,’ demonstrating in front of the Defense Ministry.’ They waved banners that read, ‘Victory or Death’ and chanted ‘Jihad! Jihad!’—all punctuated by cries of ‘Allahu Akbar!’ Likewise, Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya—the group responsible for slaughtering some 60 European tourists in the 1997 Luxor Massacre—was at the protests. Even the so-called ‘moderate’ Muslim Brotherhood participated.

Two lessons emerge here: 1) an Islamist is an Islamist is an Islamist: when it comes down to ideology, they are one; 2) Violence and more calls to jihad are the fruits of clemency—the thanks Egypt’s Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) gets for releasing such Islamists imprisoned during ousted President Hosni Mubarak’s tenure.” Read more.

Lebanon: Daughter Of Shiite Cleric Physically And Psychologically Tortured For Converting To Christianity

“A Lebanese priest who baptized a Muslim woman has been kidnapped and released.

The daughter of a Shiite cleric ‘said she was physically and psychologically tortured by her father for converting to Christianity three years ago, although she is a 24-year-old adult,’ said Maronite Catholic Bishop Simon Atallah of Baalbek. ‘I have received an unconfirmed report that she had recently fled to an unknown destination after her father forced her to marry someone.’

The kidnappers thought that Father Walid Gharious knew the woman’s whereabouts and later released him. The nation’s president condemned the kidnapping.

According to the prelate, the kidnapped is part of an escalating pattern of violence against local Catholics.

‘Last Wednesday, unknown assailants fired gunshots at the house of a priest from the Kairouz family in the town of Nabha, and a similar incident occurred on Sunday before the start of the municipal elections, when shots were fired at the Our Lady Church in Nabha,’ he said.” Source – Catholic Culture.

By James Tozer and Nazia Parveen – “Detectives who brought down a child sex grooming ring are poised to make more arrests – as the hunt continues for more than 40 other suspected members of the gang.

Nine Asian men were yesterday jailed for a total of 77 years for raping and abusing up to 47 girls – some as young as 13 – after plying them with alcohol and luring them to takeaways.

Now police have identified four more suspects alleged to have abused the young witness whose evidence helped secure convictions at the end of the 11-week trial.

But many more remain at large as officers try to establish the real identities of men referred to in court only by nicknames such as Goofy, Ray, Juicy, Arfan, Ali, Manni, Mamma, Pino and Arfan.

The suspected abusers have proved difficult to track down and it is feared some of them have already fled the country.

But police in Greater Manchester have managed to identify four men accused of sexually abusing the main witness at a ‘sex party’ in 2008.

Detectives believe at least one may be in Pakistan. They expect to make arrests in the next few days but are not planning to extend the investigation abroad.

The trial heard that the men – who are all from Pakistan, apart from one who is from Afghanistan – groomed and ‘shared’ the young white girls because they were vulnerable.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Heywood, of Greater Manchester Police said: ‘It is not a racial issue. This is about adults preying on vulnerable young children. It just happens that in this particular area and time the demographics were that these were Asian men.’

However, the gang’s ringleader yesterday branded the judge a ‘racist b******’ after he and eight other men were jailed.

The extraordinary outburst came after Judge Gerald Clinton accused the gang of targeting white girls because they were not part of their ‘community or religion’.” Read more.

Syria’s Symphony Of Destruction: Massive Suicide Car Bombs Kill 59, Wounds 372 In Damascus

No one claimed responsibility yet, but given the size of the blasts and the fact that these were suicide car bombs suggests that Al-Qaeda was directly involved …

“Two suicide car bombers killed at least 59 people and wounded 372 in Damascus, Syrian officials and state media say.

This comes as the deadliest attacks in the Syrian capital since an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began 14 months ago.

The blasts happened near a military intelligence building during morning rush hour. State TV showed burnt cars and two deep craters in the road.

The near-simultaneous explosions hit the al-Qazaz district just before 8 a.m. (0500 GMT), residents said. One blast punched a crater three meters (10 feet) deep in the city’s southern ring road.

Bloodied corpses and body parts could be seen on the road.

The Syrian Interior ministry said that the bombers used more than 1,000 kilograms of explosives in their vehicles.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for Thursday’s blasts, the Syrian government and the opposition blamed each other. Both sides are supposed to observe a ceasefire monitored by a UN team.

However violence has continued unabated across the country, with the restive city of Homs shelled again overnight.” Read more.

Indonesia: Government Shuts Down At Least 16 Christian ‘Houses Of Worship’ After Muslim Complaints

By Nurdin Hasan, Jakarta Globe – “The Aceh administration has shut down at least 16 Christian places of worship since May 2, alleging they were being run without permits and had been drawing complaints from locals.

The 16 buildings, called ‘undung-undung’ in Aceh, were located across four subdistricts in Aceh Singkil district. Different from churches, undung-undungs are smaller in size and have no cross on their exterior.

Aceh Singkil district head Razali Abdul Rahman said his administration started sealing the buildings May 2 and May 3 in response to locals’ complaints.

‘It’s not churches but undung-undungs that we’ve sealed. It’s because they don’t have any permits and because they’ve breached a previously agreed deal,’ Razali told the Jakarta Globe.

‘The sealing of houses of worship that run without permits is meant to avoid conflicts among the religious communities,’ he added. ‘We previously agreed that there should be only one church and four undung-undungs in Singkil.’

On April 30, hundreds of members of the Aceh Singkil Muslim Forum held a rally in the town to demand the closing of the undung-undungs.” Read more.

‘Netanyahu is forming a war government,’ al-Quds al-Arabi’s headline cried. ‘No one knows what goes on through the mind of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on many regional issues these days. One can predict that this man is scheming and planning wars after murdering the peace process with the settlement policy in the occupied Arab territories,’ the London-based paper said.

According to Philip Jenkins, a leading expert on Christianity, in Nigeria, what is at stake is the balance between Islam and Christianity. The Islamic conquest of Africa began in the seventh century, when the Umayyads spread the faith in the Mediterranean lands which had long been Byzantine. But in deeper Africa, the penetration was difficult and for centuries Islam was unable to climb over the Horn of Africa.

Now, with modern methods of warfare, we are witnessing a wave of Islamization with unforeseeable, tragic consequences. The ‘Islamic project’ is trying to build a unique ‘adan’ (Islamic call for prayer) from the Libyan minarets to the Juma Mosque in Durban, South Africa.

Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania are already 90 percent Islamized, the rate decreases as one moves downward, reaching nine per cent in South Africa and almost none in the rest of the southern region – so far.

The goal is creating a big African-Islamic continent. Christians must be killed or
