One Week to Save the Euro as EU Summit Ends on Friday

“PARIS: One way or another, this is crunch week for the euro. By the end of the EU summit on Friday, European voters and markets will know how their leaders plan to save the single currency bloc.

The outlines of a plan have begun to emerge, but details will be thrashed out over a perilous week of high-wire economic diplomacy, starting on Monday, when Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel comes back to Paris.

She and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have vowed to unveil proposed EU treaty changes to create what Merkel has dubbed a ‘European fiscal union with strict rules’ and the French leader calls ‘true economic government.’

If the proposed reforms are seen as a credible guarantee that eurozone governments will at last bring their deficits under control, European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi has suggested ‘that other elements might follow’.

This has been taken as a signal the ECB might intervene to protect European banks from any credit crunch and to buy bonds to rein in soaring interest rates on government borrowing, perhaps acting in concert with the IMF.

Would that be enough to end the debt crisis and save the euro? Some expert observers think so, others fear it will be too little too late, and in any case between now and then many questions will have to be answered.” Read more.

Sarkozy Says Euro Risks Breakup Without Economic Convergence – “French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the 17-nation euro area would risk ‘exploding’ if members fail to converge economically. The countries sharing the currency must prepare their budgets in common, narrow competitiveness gaps and face tougher automatic penalties for rule breaking, Sarkozy said today in Toulon, France, outlining proposals to overhaul Europe’s governing treaties. “There can’t be a single currency without economies heading toward more convergence,” Sarkozy told 5,000 supporters in 50-minute speech in the Mediterranean port. ‘If living standards, productivity, and competitiveness gaps widen among euro-zone countries, the euro will sooner rather than later be too strong for some and too weak for others, and the euro zone will explode.'” Read more.

By Gil Ronen – “Norway is suffering from an unprecedented wave of rapes that are largely being perpetrated by Muslim immigrants against local women, according to Yehuda Bello, an acclaimed Israeli blogger whose special interests include Norway.

Bello, who understands Norwegian and has Norwegian contacts, reported that from January to late October, 48 rapes were confirmed to have been carried out in Oslo alone, 45 of them by Muslims. In the first six months of 2011, 208 Norwegian women complained of rape and attempted rape in Oslo alone. In all of Norway, 929 rapes and attempted aggravated rapes were reported since the beginning of the year, he added.

Bello notes that Norway is ‘the most advanced country in the world in granting rights to women.’ However, he adds, the ‘politically correct rot’ prevents the rape wave by Muslims from being reported. ‘They are called ‘non-western,’ ‘dark skinned,’ ‘Middle Eastern’ et cetera.

After a police report in Oslo said that Muslims were raping Norwegian women out of a religious conviction that this was the proper thing to do, a stormy public debate erupted, reports Bello, and ‘the government ministers, most of them avowed anti-Semites, claimed that the report and its publication serve Israel and its policy of occupation. Unbelievable, Norwegian women are raped daily and these people embroil Israel in the matter.'” Read more.

Iran Claims to Shoot Down Unmanned US Spy Drone, Threatens a ‘Strong and Crushing Response’

If true, the RQ-170 was likely detected because of a few apparent design omissions common to other aircraft intended to evade radar, namely an exhaust that is not shielded by the wing, notched landing gear and a lack of sharp edges. I’d still be curious, however, to know what Iran used to shoot down this UAV.  Though an expensive proposition (and doubtful), it’s also not out of the realm of possibility that this is precisely what the US military wanted the Iranians to do …

Update: U.S. official says no sign Iran shot down drone – “Iranian media reported on Sunday that their country’s military had shot down a U.S. reconnaissance drone in eastern Iran, but a U.S. official said there was no indication the aircraft had been shot down. NATO’s U.S.-led mission in neighbouring Afghanistan said the Iranian report could refer to an unarmed U.S. spy drone that went missing there last week.” Read more.

Iran’s claim didn’t state when the spy drone was “shot down”, so it may in fact be the one that the US military “lost” last week …

Update 2: U.S. Military Sources: Iran Has Missing U.S. Drone – “Iran appears to be in possession of one of America’s most sophisticated weapons, a super-secret spy plane whose stealth technology is the same as the drone used to monitor the compound during the raid that killed Usama bin Laden, U.S. military sources told Fox News on Monday. Military sources confirmed that the Iranians have the RQ-170 drone, which is so advanced that the U.S. Air Force has not distributed even a photo of it.” Read more.

Update 3: Iran displays downed UAV, now claims it ‘electronically hijacked’ it – “Iranian military officials have shown off an advanced US spy drone which they say was brought down by electronic warfare near the Afghan border. Images broadcast on Iranian TV showed Iranian military officials inspecting the radar-evading, wedge-shaped aircraft, which appeared to be undamaged. US officials have acknowledged the loss of the unmanned RQ-170 Sentinel, saying it malfunctioned near the Afghan border during a reconnaissance flight in western Afghanistan last week. But Iranian officials say an “electronic warfare unit” of the Revolutionary Guard electronically hijacked the drone and steered it to the ground.” Read more.

“TEHRAN, Iran—Iran’s armed forces shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane that violated Iranian airspace along the country’s eastern border, the official IRNA news agency reported Sunday.

An unidentified military official quoted in the report warned of a strong and crushing response to any violations of the country’s airspace by American drone aircraft.

‘An advanced RQ-170 unmanned American spy plane was shot down by Iran’s armed forces. It suffered minor damage and is now in possession of Iran’s armed forces,’ IRNA quoted the official as saying.
