Egypt: Israel Watches Closely as Islamist Influence Rises and Chaos Builds in the Streets of Cairo After Truce Fails
By ANTHONY SHADID – “CAIRO — The outskirts of Tahrir Square, the iconic landmark of Egypt’s revolution, plunged into chaos on Wednesday, after attempts by the Egyptian military, religious clerics and doctors failed to stanch a fifth day of fighting that has posed the greatest crisis to the country since the fall of President Hosni Mubarak in February.
The fighting in darkened streets, suffused with tear gas and eerily illuminated by the flashing lights of police cars and the floodlights of armored personnel carriers, seemed to stand as a metaphor for a political transition that has careened into deep uncertainty just days before elections that were supposed to anchor the shift from military to civilian rule.
The military that seized power with Mr. Mubarak’s fall rebuffed protesters’ demands to surrender authority this week, and the political elite has seemed paralyzed or defensive over the unrest. The discontent in Tahrir Square has broadened from demands for the generals to cede control and anger over bloodshed into dissatisfaction with a transition that has delivered precious little since the uprising’s heady days in February.
‘This is a revolution of the hungry!’ declared Amr Ali Mohammed, a 23-year-old protester taking a break from the battle with the police. ‘Egyptians have had enough.’…
Clashes escalated through the night, and the Ministry of Health said 500 people were injured in just two hours. Bonfires cast a glow down darkened streets, where protesters retreated from tear gas, stumbling over the debris of their days of melees.
‘The turning point is coming soon,’ said Mostafa Helmy, a 55-year-old engineer.” Read more.
Strict Muslims stake claim on Egypt’s political scene – “On a beach-front wall in Egypt’s second city where courting couples often stroll are scrawled the words: ‘Would you accept this for your sister?’ and ‘Be in fear of God.’ For frequenters of Alexandria’s shores, the authors of the disapproving messages are clear: Salafis, ultra-conservative Islamists who have overcome their distaste for politics to stake a claim on Egypt’s future after Hosni Mubarak’s overthrow. ‘What we want is the complete commitment to Islamic sharia law…'” Read more.
Egypt unrest stirs fears inside Israel – “Days of protest in Egypt, ahead of elections expected to produce big wins for the Muslim Brotherhood, have stirred fears in Israel about bilateral ties and the future of the countries’ peace treaty… On Wednesday, Israel’s civil defence minister Matan Vilnai urged Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads Egypt’s ruling military council, to bring the situation under control. ‘The situation is problematic, sensitive and unclear. Tantawi is trying to avoid chaos and transfer power in the mostly orderly way possible,’ Vilnai told Israeli military radio. ‘We hope that he will succeed… otherwise we will see general chaos and that will be very bad for Egypt.'” Read more.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu slams US President Obama. I can’t wait to see what he (and other world leaders) finally have to say when Obama is officially voted out of office. Netanyahu saw it earlier this year, and what he saw then is even more pronounced today: Jacob is in for quite a bit of trouble up ahead …
By Barak Ravid – “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday blasted Israeli and world politicians who support the Arab Spring revolutions and accused the Arab world of ‘moving not forward, but backward.’
In his sharpest Knesset comment since the wave of uprisings swept out of Tunisia and across the Arab states in January, Netanyahu expressed his complete contempt for the Arab people’s ability to sustain democratic regimes, and his nostalgia for Hosni Mubarak’s regime in Egypt. He said he feared the collapse of Jordan’s Hashemite monarchy and also reiterated his absolute refusal to make any concessions to the Palestinians.
‘In February, when millions of Egyptians thronged to the streets in Cairo, commentators and quite a few Israeli members of the opposition said that we’re facing a new era of liberalism and progress…They said I was trying to scare the public and was on the wrong side of history and don’t see where things are heading,’ he said.
But time has proved him right, Netanyahu said. His forecast that the Arab Spring would turn into an ‘Islamic, anti-Western, anti-liberal, anti-Israeli and anti-democratic wave’ turned out to be true, he said.
Netanyahu also slammed Western leaders, and especially U.S. President Barak Obama, who had pushed Mubarak to resign from power. At the time this was happening Netanyahu said in closed talks that the American administration and many European leaders don’t understand reality. On Wednesday, he called them ‘naive.'” Read more.

There is no longer a single Christian church left in Afghanistan. Why just stop there? There is something seriously wrong with this picture when thousands of American and coalition men & women have sacrificed their lives upon the altar of freedom for an Islamic country, only to have the freedoms of their own brothers and sisters in arms slowly stripped away so that the ones we’ve ‘freed’ aren’t offended. When even the greatest military power in the world — the defenders of the “land of the free” — takes down the cross and falls into submission to the prison of Islam and political correctness, let it be a reminder to each of us why we must, more than ever, take it up each and every day …
By TIM MAK – “A large cross that had been prominently displayed outside a chapel on an isolated military base in northern Afghanistan was taken down last week, prompting outrage from some American service members stationed there.
‘We are here away from our families, and the chapel is the one place that feels like home,’ a service member at Camp Marmal told POLITICO. ‘With the cross on the outside, it is a constant reminder for all of us that Jesus is here for us.’
‘Not having it there is really upsetting,’ added another. ‘I walk by the chapel daily on the way to chow and the gym, and seeing the cross is a daily reminder of my faith and what Jesus accomplished for me. It is daily inspiration and motivation for me to acknowledge my faith and stay on the right path.’
Camp Marmal is a German base that hosts NATO forces. The interfaith chapel in question is supervised by the U.S. Army.
The soldiers said they found great comfort in the chapel — and the cross visible outside. ‘Sometimes the Church and the ability to openly express religious views ultimately gets people through the deployments over here,’ one told POLITICO by email.
The service member said he asked the base chaplain, a military officer, what had happened to the cross. ‘I had to take it down,’ said the chaplain, according to the solider, without further explanation.” Read more.
Flashback: US Marines Warned: Act More Muslim, Don’t Spit Towards Mecca – “Uncle Sam is getting a little weird. Make that a lot weird. Having dumped hundreds of billions of dollars into a sinkhole called Afghanistan — populated by misogynistic, pederastic, tribalistic and religiously supremacist primitives — to no avail, he has hit on a new plan for winning those ever-elusive Afghan ‘hearts and minds.’ Uncle Sam has decided that the answer lies in the latrine with the U.S. Marine Corps. No kidding. When nature calls, Uncle Sam has decided he wants every U.S. Marine equipped with a map and compass, or some other way of knowing direction. This is to ensure that no U.S. Marine in Afghanistan urinates in the direction of Mecca ever again.” Read more.
Study: Radioactive Water from Fukushima Reaches International Date Line 4,000 Kilometers East of Japan
By TAKASHI SUGIMOTO – “Radioactive water from the damaged Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant has reached the international date line, about 4,000 kilometers east of Japan in the Pacific Ocean, according to estimates.
The concentration of radioactive cesium-137 will be 0.1-0.01 becquerel per liter by the end of November, 10 to 100 times higher than before the accident started, according to estimates by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology.
The concentration will be at one-2,000th to one-20,000th of the government safety standard for potable water, but monitoring will be necessary for any impact on fish and shellfish.
A team of researchers led by Yukio Masumoto estimated the flow based on radiation levels measured in waters around the Fukushima No. 1 plant, taking convection and other factors into account.
Radioactive water that leaked from the plant first moved along the coast and then gradually moved offshore.” Read more.
Nuke crisis sends hundreds of Tokyoites fleeing to Okinawa – “Following the Fukushima nuclear crisis and fearing the spread of radiation, a number of Kanto residents fled to this southernmost prefecture and continue to live here despite the lack of personal connections. ‘The Okinawans are really warm-hearted. I wouldn’t want to live in Tokyo again,’ said Jin Tanimura, 38, clad in ‘kariyushi’ wear, a locally promoted attire that looks like a Hawaiian shirt. Following the nuclear crisis, more people have moved out of Tokyo and surrounding areas to Okinawa and other parts of western Japan than have moved in. Some well-known figures, including the writer Hitomi Kanehara, have openly said they evacuated out of the region to safety.” Read more.
By Chana Ya’ar – “A secret Hizbullah terrorist warehouse exploded overnight near the coastal city of Tyre, located in southern Lebanon not far from Israel’s northern border, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Beirut.
The blast occurred in an area under the control of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Nevertheless, Hizbullah forces have prevented security personnel from reaching the site, making it impossible to obtain any information about what actually happened.
A UNIFIL spokesman told reporters, ‘We have no information as yet,’ in response to questions about the explosion. The international force is expected to investigate.
Hizbullah has boasted that the group possesses tens of thousands of missiles of varying ranges that it can aim at Israel whenever it chooses.
U.N. Resolution 1701, the ceasefire agreement that ended the Second Lebanon War in 2006, specifically prohibits Hizbullah from storing munitions or other ordnance in southern Lebanon.” Source – Arutz Sheva.
Report: Hezbollah considering military coup if Assad falls – “Hezbollah’s leadership is considering the possibility of taking control of Beirut and effectively carrying out a military coup in Lebanon should the current Syrian regime fall, the al-Arabia network reported Tuesday. According to the report, Hezbollah members have expressed concerns over the escalation of the civil uprising in Syria, which could lead to the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime. The Syrian president is an ally of the Lebanese Shiite group. Sources close to Hezbollah noted that it was due to those concerns that the Hezbollah leadership was examining various scenarios – including a ‘broad maneuver on the ground,’ similar to the takeover of Beirut in May 2008. However, the current plans apparently include a much more extensive maneuver which may expand to a military coup. ‘As soon as Hezbollah will sense that the collapse of Assad’s regime is imminent, armed cells will quickly begin operating to seize control of Beirut’s eastern and western parts,’ one of the sources told al-Arabia.” Read more.
Turkey warns Assad his days are numbered – “Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday that his days as leader were numbered and he cannot remain in power indefinitely through military force. After reports that two buses carrying Turkish pilgrims came under attack in Syria, Erdogan said his one-time ally’s defiant refusal to end a bloody crackdown on protesters had increased the prospects of foreign intervention. ‘You can remain in power with tanks and cannons only up to a certain point. The day will come when you’ll also leave,’ Erdogan told a meeting in Istanbul. ‘Someone shows up and says ‘I’ll fight and die. Against whom will you fight? Will you fight against your Muslim brothers you rule in your country?’ said Erdogan.” Read more.
Iranian EMP Nuke Attack Over the US: ‘Two-Thirds of the American Population Would Perish From Starvation, Disease, and Societal Collapse’ Within One Year
During yesterday’s GOP debate on CNN, Newt Gingrich indicated that one of the greatest national security threats facing America right now is an EMP weapon exploding over the lower continental US. Here is why …
If the Iranians acquire a nuclear bomb, they might be able to cripple their ‘Great Satan’ even sooner through an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, attack off America’s coastline.
‘Within a year of an EMP event, at least two-thirds of the American population would perish from starvation, disease, and societal collapse. It’s a high-tech means of killing people the old fashioned way,’ Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, president of EMPact America, explained.
A nuclear weapon detonated above the U.S. would emit powerful electromagnetic pulses, frying America’s electrical grid and shutting down necessities from cars to computers to airplanes and refrigerators.
Iranian military handbooks point out the benefits of such an attack. Russia, China, and North Korea also possess EMP technology.
Pry, a member of the congressional EMP Commission, said America could plunge back into the 19th century, with Katrina-like chaos nationwide.
‘A single nuclear weapon will cause the collapse of the electric power grid, all the critical infrastructures and other electronic systems across the entire continental United States and basically cause a permanent blackout,’ he told CBN News.
Pry’s nightmare scenario shows Iran or its terrorist proxy, Hezbollah, parking an unmarked freighter off America’s East Coast or in the Gulf of Mexico.
They would fire a nuclear-tipped scud above a city like New York, then immediately sink the freighter to destroy evidence of their handiwork.
‘Even if we were able to identify the scud by our radars, we wouldn’t be able to identify who did it,’ he explained. ‘This is a way of keeping your fingerprints off it.'” Read more.
Is Iran claiming to have secret “hidden energy” weapon to use against Israel and America? – “Iran dares Israel to attack, because the retaliation would send the Jewish state to ‘the dustbin of history,’ a senior Revolutionary Guards commander said, according to the Fars news agency Monday. ‘Our greatest wish is that they commit such a mistake,’ the chief of the Guards’ aerospatial division, Amir-Ali Hadjizadeh, was quoted as saying. ‘For some time there has been a hidden energy we hope to expend to consign the enemies of Islam forever to the dustbin of history,’ he said. ‘Our ballistic (missile) capacity never ceases to grow,’ he added. The comments were one of the most belligerent reactions yet by an Iranian official to speculation that Israel was considering launching air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.” Read more.
By Gil Ronen – “An Israeli attack on nuclear sites in Iran would go beyond air strikes from fighter planes and likely include electronic warfare against Iran’s electric grid, Internet, cellphone network, and emergency frequencies for fire and police services, according to a report by Eli Lake, a correspondent for Newsweek and the Daily Beast.
For much of the last decade, writes Lake, ‘Israel has been assembling a multibillion-dollar array of high-tech weapons that would allow it to jam, blind, and deafen Tehran’s defenses in the case of a pre-emptive aerial strike.’
U.S. intelligence officials are reported as saying that Israel has developed a weapon capable of mimicking a maintenance cellphone signal that commands a cell network to ‘sleep,’ effectively stopping transmissions. The Israelis ‘also have jammers capable of creating interference within Iran’s emergency frequencies for first responders,’ they said.
In the 2007 attack on a suspected nuclear site in Syria, Israeli planes ‘spoofed’ the enemy’s air-defense radars, ‘at first making it appear that no jets were in the sky and then in an instant making the radar believe the sky was filled with hundreds of planes,’ Lake writes.” Read more.
War coming in the Middle East? – “How big a concern is Israel’s growing insecurity? Will it lead it to go to war? The U.S. government is turning some screws on Iran, and Israel continues to fret in public. I’ve heard talk of an attack coming but I don’t understand what Israel might gain from doing so, especially because it isn’t clear that air strikes could really take apart much of the Iranian nuclear program, or even do as much damage as Stuxnet did. On the other hand, with Egypt, Libya and Syria in turmoil and Iraq about to be stripped of any air defense capability… Meanwhile, in Iran, satellite imagery shows stepped-up activity at an alleged nuke site. And Ahmadinejad’s press guy was arrested. I wonder if that is the Middle Eastern political equivalent of fish and birds sensing an imminent earthquake.” Source.
