Pakistan Christian Congress: Appeal to be Sent to the United Nations to Allow Refugee Status for Pakistani Christians

08/01/2011 1 comment

“The head of a Christian congress in Pakistan announced recently that he will send an appeal to the United Nations to allow refugee status for Pakistani Christians because they do not feel safe in their own country.

Dr. Nazir S. Bhatti, chief of Pakistan Christian Congress, said the PCC is demanding that the Pakistani government opens its borders so that Christians may flee to bordering countries such as Afghanistan, India and China.

‘The Christians in Pakistan do not feel safe, and they want to flee for the safety of their lives. We are asking that they be given refugee status,’ Bhatti told the Pakistan Christian Post.

Bhatti said this will continue to be necessary unless the blasphemy law is repealed. He also said the Federal Minority Ministry must be restored, and there should be an end to kidnapping and enforced conversion of Christian women to Islam so that they can be married to influential Muslims against their will.

The number of kidnappings, forced conversion to Islam and gang rape of Christian women has doubled in the year 2010-2011.” Read more.

Egypt: With Mubarak’s Fall, Christians Become Prey

By Betsy Hiel – “QENA, Egypt — When Ayman Anwar Mitri heard his apartment building had burned, the high school administrator rushed to see the damage.

He found a crowd of bearded men waiting.

They ‘beat me all over’ with charred furniture, recalls Mitri, 47, one of the Coptic Christians who make up 10 to 15 percent of Egypt’s 83 million people.

He says a rival falsely accused him of renting the apartment to two Muslim prostitutes and of having sex with them — a social and sectarian taboo that inflamed local Islamists.

‘They were chanting, ‘There is no god but Allah.’ They wanted me to convert to Islam,’ Mitri says. ‘… I was on my knees with my hands over my head. It felt like icicles falling on my body, and I prayed.’

An attacker slashed his back, an arm and a cheek with a box cutter before slicing off his right ear.

Afterward, a caller told police: ‘We took our Islamic justice; you can now take your civilian justice.’

White gauze is wrapped around Mitri’s head, covering the wound and part of his receding hair. A small cross is tattooed on his right wrist.

He says he learned his attackers — who were never charged — were Salafis.

Four days later, he says, authorities forced him into a ‘reconciliation’ meeting with the men and made him change his police statement to deny knowing the culprits.

Across Egypt, Salafis are accused of increased violence, mostly against Christians, since the Mubarak regime fell in February.

‘A month ago, you wouldn’t even dare to walk around. We were expecting them to throw acid (on us),’ says Hala Helmy Botros, 47, a Coptic activist and blogger here. ‘They were on fire, cutting off ears and making lots of threats.'” Read more.

Japan: Authorities Now Discovering that Radioactive Cesium is Not Evenly Distributed in Cows Exposed to Fukushima Fallout

“Amateur hour at the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare who thought testing one sample from the meat of one cow would be enough.

According to Mainichi Shinbun, the Japanese authorities are finding out that the different parts of the same cow have different concentration of radioactive cesium. Not only that, the same part of the meat from the same cow can yield two different test results. That means even the meat that was tested and deemed ‘safe’ (tested below 500 becquerels/kg of radioactive cesium) may not have been safe after all.

Before they actually started to measure, the prevailing opinion from the radiation experts was that radioactive cesium would get evenly distributed in the muscles throughout the body. Amateur hour at the radiation experts, too. (Now they are changing tunes.)

So, no one knew, and no one knows what they’re doing. I seem to fondly recall some of the words of Japan’s consumer advocates – ‘the experts say it’s safe…’, or ‘why should we waste taxpayers’ money testing all cows?’, or ‘if only media did the good job of providing accurate information…’ Amateur hours there, too.

My message to consumers: caveat emptor.” Read more.

Highest radiation level monitored to date at stricken Japan nuclear plant – “The operator of a crippled Japanese atomic power plant said Monday it had measured the highest radiation level since the start of the nuclear crisis, a news report said, dpa reported. Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said more than 10 sieverts per hour of radiation was recorded on the surface of a pipe located outdoors between reactor 1 and reactor 2 at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Jiji Press reported. The plant has spewed radioactive material into the environment since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.” Read more.

Signs in the Sun: Some Scientists Believe Bursts of Solar Activity May Be Causing Natural Disasters on Earth

08/01/2011 Leave a comment

“Some scientists believe bursts of solar activity cause natural disasters on our planet, but until now the star has been too difficult to reach or explore in any detail. Some Russian researchers think they have the solution.

Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis – apocalyptic pictures are becoming an ordinary part of news bulletins across the globe. And scientists are not giving out reassuring forecasts.

‘Unfortunately, we’re expecting more severe cataclysms which may lead to large-scale human losses and destruction,’ says Baku-based Professor Elchin Kakhalilov of the Global Network for the Forecasting of Earthquakes. ‘I’m talking about even a possible shift of the centers of our entire civilization.’

The change in the Earth’s seismic activity coincides with the rise of activity on the sun. Scientists have been witnessing gigantic bursts of plasma on its surface and say they are affecting our planet, even though it is over 90 million miles away.

Each burst sends billions of particles into space which impacts the Earth’s magnetic field. This may trigger some of the processes going on deep bellow its surface, leading to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.” Read more.

China: Islamic Separatists Blamed for Attacks in Northwest Xinjiang Uyghur Region, at Least 14 Dead and 40 Injured

“Beijing (CNN) — Weekend violence in northwest China left at least 14 people dead and more than 40 injured as authorities searched for additional suspects in a pair of attacks, a government official said Monday.

Local officials blamed the violence on an Islamic separatist group.

An explosion in the city of Kashi in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region on Sunday killed six people, said Hou Hanmin, a regional government spokesman. The blast also injured 15 people, including three police, Hou said.

Kashi — as the city is called in Chinese — is also known as Kashgar in the Uyghur language.

On Saturday, a knifing spree in the same city started when two men stabbed a truck driver, took control of the vehicle and drove into pedestrians, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The men then hopped out of the truck and attacked bystanders before locals subdued them.

Eight people died in Saturday’s violence, Hou said. One suspect was killed in the fighting, and another was apprehended.” Read more.

Flower Power Islam: The Religion of Peace … and Love

1 Timothy 4:1-3a, “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods …”

By JACK HEALY – “HERAT, Afghanistan — The two teenagers met inside an ice cream factory through darting glances before roll call, murmured hellos as supervisors looked away and, finally, a phone number folded up and tossed discreetly onto the workroom floor.

It was the beginning of an Afghan love story that flouted dominant traditions of arranged marriages and close family scrutiny, a romance between two teenagers of different ethnicities that tested a village’s tolerance for more modern whims of the heart. The results were delivered with brutal speed.

This month, a group of men spotted the couple riding together in a car, yanked them into the road and began to interrogate the boy and girl. Why were they together? What right had they? An angry crowd of 300 surged around them, calling them adulterers and demanding that they be stoned to death or hanged.

When security forces swooped in and rescued the couple, the mob’s anger exploded. They overwhelmed the local police, set fire to cars and stormed a police station six miles from the center of Herat, raising questions about the strength of law in a corner of western Afghanistan and in one of the first cities that has made the formal transition to Afghan-led security.

The riot, which lasted for hours, ended with one man dead, a police station charred and the two teenagers, Halima Mohammedi and her boyfriend, Rafi Mohammed, confined to juvenile prison. Officially, their fates lie in the hands of an unsteady legal system. But they face harsher judgments of family and community.” Read more.

Morocco: Thousands of Fish Mysteriously Die Along the Banks of the Moulouya River

08/01/2011 4 comments

“Since mid-June, thousands of dead fish have been rotting along the banks of the Moulouya River, in north-east Morocco. While tests are being carried out to establish the cause of death, environmental activists are blaming a local sugar refinery that they accuse of ‘environmental crimes.’

After residents notified local environmental groups of the situation, these groups formed a collective called the ‘North Moroccan Green Platform’ to shed light on the problem. The collective points out that the river’s estuary is classified as a protected site of biological and ecological interest, and that its fauna risks extinction. In Oriental, a north-eastern region of Morocco, dead fish litter the river’s shores for dozens of kilometres, as several videos show.

The environmentalists put the blame on the sugar refinery Sucrafor. The refinery is part of the Moroccan group Cosumar, which has a monopoly on Morocco’s national sugar production. This is not the first time that the company has been blamed for contaminating the Moulouya River. In the 1980s and 1990s, environmentalists said Sucrafor had released more waste water into the river than was legally allowed.

This new scandal comes just one month after the new Moroccan constitution was adopted. Article 35 of the constitution stipulates that the state guarantees all citizens the ‘right to water, a clean environment and sustainable development.'” Read more.

Arab Spring: Democracy or Caliphate?

08/01/2011 Leave a comment

Seems that every passing day there is an ever increasing wave of support for the reestablishment of the Islamic Caliphate.  Here is an article from Pakistan on July 3rd, 2011 that instead of being from the perspective of one looking in, it is rather from the perspective of one looking out …

By Syed Shariq – “… The extent of the malaise in the Muslim world requires a comprehensive change, not just a change of faces. Replacing Ben Ali in Tunisia or Mubarak in Egypt with those who worked with, supported, or even legitimised their regimes is no solution. Democracy is not the solution either. Pakistan and Sudan are democracies after all, and are no better than an Egypt or Tunisia. What is required is a comprehensive change at the level of the regime and system.

This is what the people want. The emphatic slogan of the uprisings was unequivocal: The people want the downfall of the regime; not the President, but the entire regime. This is, of course, the type of change Western governments do not want. They have been working hard to hijack the uprisings and to get away with mere cosmetic changes. Undoubtedly, their role in the uprisings has been intrusive, exploitative and hypocritical. In this regard, the West continues to doublespeak.

The propaganda is also persistent. If one were to go by the coverage of the mainstream media or the pronouncements of Western leaders, one would think that people of the Middle East and North Africa have finally seen the ‘light’ of the Western way of life, and are calling for liberal democracy. This could not be further from the truth. Being subject to decades of Western imperialism, Muslims have an intimate appreciation of what Western ideology has to offer, and they reject it outright. Instead, keeping the historical context in mind, it is clear to any impartial observer that it is the Islamic revival that gathers steam and the Muslims want change on the basis of Islam. The proof of this has been furnished elsewhere. And so they should. It is not the European model of the secular nation-state that represents the values, beliefs and history of the Muslim world; it is the Islamic model of the Caliphate.

The Caliphate, far from being a threat to the world that some would have us believe, would be a source of progress. For one, it will fill the political and leadership vacuum in the Muslim world and, thereby, would be a source of stability, and, in turn, progress and prosperity. A stable Muslim world means a much more stable and peaceful world. Two, the Caliphate would offer a new intellectual and political leadership to rival, and break USA’s monopoly as the sole superpower, whose foreign policy has wreaked much havoc on the world. Surely, advocates of liberalism cannot argue against competition?

Many in the West will disagree with our arguments…” Read more.

Disagree?  Well, we’ve read the end of the Book Mr. Shariq, and we know how this story ends
